Hi. I am level 6 and just started the main quest (gone to the Urksh.... Camp). I have also done 2/3 quests for the Fighters Guild and am going to join the Redoran House shortly. I was wondering what the best order was to play the game in. Should I go right through the Redoran House, get a stronghold and then do the quest, or should I do the main quest and them others?
Any help/advice would be appreciated

Well you don't have to complete the Redoran House's quests to get a stronghold you only need to attain the rank of kingsman that is about half way.
I'd consider at least completing one of the guilds you have chosen before starting the main quest. This isn't to say you can't do the main quest at you level its just I think you'll enjoy the main quest more when you have gained the reputation and power being the head of a faction brings.
Only my opinion by the way i know there's a lot of people out there who have started the main quest first. On the other hand i know there are people who have a very high level character who is the head of many guilds who haven't even started the main quest next.
In regards to house Redoran don't expect to get well paid most of your efforts are for free and it will cost you about 5,000 gold to build your stronghold...

Thanks for that. I think I will work my way through a house first and than do the main quest. i assume i'll need to be stronger anyway.
As I am a battlemage Dark Elf, would Telvanni suit me better. I actually am looking to use weapons and armor more than spells, but also want to use potions as well. Do you think Redoran or Telvanni then?
Cheers Red

Seems we've got something in common as my new custom class character is very similar to a battlemage the only difference is that I've modified the skills and made him just a bit more of a fighter.
I joined the Redoran because my character is combat specialised and also because i saw some of their leaders with a past character and they look really cool - shiny steel armour with double handed swords and a kind of battle 'skirt' for want of a better word which makes them look really regal and knightly...
If you are using the Battlemage class i think i'd advise you to join the telvanni because i think you might find it easier to progress being a magic specialised class.
Things to look forward to in the Telvanni -
1. Giant 'mushroom' wizards tower with your own dungeon (with corpses :cheeky: ) and other nice things like your own spell maker etc.
2. Your own dwemer robots to guard your stronghold.
3. Lots of nice quests and free spells. One quest will allow you to pick up some nice enchanted daedric armour (including the cuirass) which should be very useful for a battle mage. This armour quest is quite unique because you can't get a deadric cuirass in any other quest in the game - the only way is to kill a character you need for the main quest.
I've heard lots of good things about the Telvanni quests so don't be disappointed with me not recommending the Redoran House.
Good Luck!

Thanks Red!
Yes. Annoyingly I joined House Hlaalu at the start, but haven't done any quests whatsoever, so that shouldn't matter. I have to do PCJOINFACTION "mychoice" when I decide, so do you think when i join another house I will be screwed at a latter point?
What about the Mages Guild. I have joined both Mages and Fighters and so have probably joined too many to do. What would be your advice on the matter!
Also, when in Telvanni do you get a stronghold (i.e half-way through?), and should i fully complete the Telvanni house and then do the quest?
Cheers

Hmmm...
Well I have to admit i haven't had much experience using the console to join houses and so I can't advise you on what will happen. In theory if you use the console to join the Telvanni and put in all the relevant journal entries you should be all right (as long as you don't advance within House Hlaalu.
The way i look at it is you're running a risk of advancing say to a high level with this character and then encountering a problem which completely ruins your game and prevents you from proceeding. You can take the risk and just hope for the best or you can start over join the one guild that suits you best and proceed without worry.
As you can tell I'd advise you to start over (with the same character) and simply join the Telvanni work your way to the top and then do the main quest or then join another guild.
You say you're at level 6 which isn't that high to restart but i admit its a big decission (i restarted at level 15!).
In regards to the Telvanni and when you get to start your stronghold I'd guess it would be half way through like with the Redoran. The stronghold you see can be upgraded in stages and is needed for you to qualify for advancement so it is necessary for you to get it sooner rather than later.
The thing to remember about the Telvanni is that they hate everyone so it's hard to say which other faction will best suit you after becoming the Telvanni Archmaster. If you fancy increasing your combat prowess perhaps the fighters guild or imperial legion might be your thing or if you want to improve some of your other magic disciplines the mages guild might suit you more.
My best advice is after joining the blades at the start join ONE other guild/house advance to the top and then join another or do the main quest.
Cheers :)

Just one or two comments... join all the factions you like at the outset, especially Thieves. The Thieves Guild won't let you join if you piss them off (I have no idea what qualifies as pissing them off, but others have had to console themselves in to bypass this) Plus, you can join every PC-accessible faction/guild/whatever, and you can advance them all as far as you like... or not; there's no hard feelings if you stay at the 1st guild rank for the entire game.
The other thing I'd suggest is that if you plan on joining the Morag Tong (assassin guild), that you join them do their quests as soon as possible; they're the only ones that really, really dislike it if you do their quests before they've been assigned to you. Oh, also, if you do plan on joining them, and you come across any items with the word 'sanguine' in them... don't lose/sell them; they're part of a loong side-quest that has a fairly nice payout, but you have to have all the sanguine items for it.

Of the many guilds and factions in the game. Are you saying that only the Telvanni, Hlaalu and Redoran houses are mutually exclusive ?
Could I for example, join up with all the other guilds and factions without any major issues ?
WingedKagouti on 12/7/2002 at 15:55
Some of the various factions have conflicting interests, but I haven't met a quest that couldn't be solved without making another faction expel you. Fighters and Thieves guild is the best example of guilds with conflicting quests, but you can solve those if you are careful.

Morrowotcha: Yup, the 3 great Houses are mutually exclusive. As WingedKagouti says, you can master your House and every guild (well, except Blades and Ashlanders I suppose)
Edit: Sorry, just re-read your question... yup, the 3 Houses are the only mutually-exclusive factions/groups/whatever.
