In real life, if I had a portal gun, it would almost certainly be stolen by some powerful force - the military would LOVE to get their hands on that baby. Assuming people leave me alone with it, yeah, I'd probably just put a portal in my room in Seattle and one in my room in Massachusetts.

How would they get it? You could have one portal anywhere in the world, then just place the second and jump through. If it was somewhere like a basement of a building or in a cave or something like that, they'd have no idea where you went.
