Besides a modern-day remake with better graphics, physics, shadows, 2-player coop, etc.
I think a lot of the stuff Shifter mod implemented is great fun and practicality. I'd like Deus Ex to have better animation, but the industry standard for a FPS hasn't really risen much in the 6 years since; just the usual projection.
Team work amongst the enemy soldiers would be fking A. Maybe some hand-to hand combat (heavily animated) would break up the mix a bit. It could be a discipline (which also calls for enemy martial artists of various degree of mastery). That's a game of itself though.
Got any bright ideas?

The choice to stay with UNATCO or accept Bob Page's offer.

You're asking for a rewrite of the story. That's too big of a branch from the canon. It's like having Garrett abandon his fate, allow either the trickster or Kallas to succeed, AND THEN see what happens.
You're asking too much. I was thinking how improvements would be made to the mechanics, maybe the maps in particular spots, etc.

No seriously, the option to stay loyal to UNATCO would be awesome.
Also, if there were to be more involved melee combat, it should be more like Thief, and not like a console fighting game, where attacks also determine your movement. I like the combat in Chronicles of Riddick, but that would be out of place in DX.
So that means just adding blocking (and maybe an optional strong overhead attack). Would be mostly useless, except for making a fight like Maggie Chow more of a fight instead of a slash/shoot and run event.
Better stealth gameplay though. Maybe that would work with certain skill point investments.

What Deus Ex needs is more games like it.

In terms of gameplay I think Invisible War got it. The choice to side with Bob Page at the end would've been cool though, and staying with UNATCO too. Kind of like how you can side with the WTO or the Order in IW.

Mechanics-wise, I'd just like to be able to put a TNT crate down without fearing for my life. :)
Although I generally prefer to stealth my way through, I too would have liked some more group combat situations in DX1. The UNATCO/NSF skirmish in Hell's Kitchen has a fair amount of replay value. Some co-operative AIs would have been good in Paris. I remember seeing a screenshot of Nicolette busting through some of the wooden barriers in the DuClare cellar, and thought, "Cool; she must follow you around a level and help clear out the bad guys." Would that it were so. :(
Speaking of Paris, I hate all this talk of "curfews" and clearing the streets; obviously just covering up for the fact that it's too hard to create a decent-sized city level with lots of people, traffic, etc.
Would have like to seen/participated-in the transitions --JC's travels with Jock in the helicopter. I really wanted a shot at flying that thing.
Would have liked augs to be swappable - being locked into your initial choice kind of flew in the face of the non-linearity the designers were reaching for. As to that, I would have liked acknowledgement or negative repercussions for audaciously hacking down Gordon Quick/Chad Dumier and their merry followers.
Would have liked a telekinetic aug. Or possession, where you inhabit or control another character, as with the cheatview console command.
Would have liked to seen the missile hit Area51.
And on a slightly schmaltzy note, I would have liked to see JC get a love interest; or something to act as a distraction from the big mission. The groundwork was there for those more RPGish elements.

The ability to hide/pick-up/move bodies as in Theif

.
Well it wasn't only that, it was also an excuse to cover the level in "bad guys" cops MJ12 etc. and force players to make a choice between stealth and violence.
IMO Paris would have been pretty boring had it not been under curfew - but your still right - the game needed way more crowding and people especially given the large size of the levels

Wait, what part of that was missing in Deus Ex?
Silkworm on 24/12/2006 at 22:05
IIRC the only way to hide a body in Deus Ex is to blow it up - obviously not an intended method of killing people with stealth and then getting away with it.
Speaking of which, even though the environments weren't designed for it, the Ai could stand some minor improvements in actually seeing whats going on around them (ie noticing when buddies are killed etc.)
