Heh, have you ever had to transcribe English? There are so many possibilities for both writing down the same phoneme as well as pronouncing the one and the same character, it's not even funny.
Oh, and by transcribe I mean stuff like (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet) IPA, not just writing down what you hear.

Yes, English is the combination of 6 languages, so spelling conventions are all over the place. German spells like it sounds. Even with the German part of English though, we had a great vowel switch that changed the sound of the spellings.
I love how much this thread is helping 'Koob decorate his apartment. :D

Nope! But couldn't the same thing be said of most other languages to some extent? French, for instance. For a goodly number of instances, the letters that make up the last syllable of a word tend to be more a guide, a way to softly imply its pronunciation, rather than a hard target.
...though I guess I could argue that there is some consistency to even that, something which English lacks.

French has similar difficulties when you want to write it down, but it's pretty reliably consistent when you read it.

Yea, accent aside, I find reading french not too difficult. But there are still English words I mispronounce because of the inconsistent rules (tho that's been mostly rooted out by now).
