I have an old laptop that fried, but I saved everything this time. I install thief on my new laptop which has a few things my other didn't - namely, a duo core, GeForce GT 220m card, and Vista 32 (ew!). I'm an XP lover, so forgive me. Anyway, I installed everything as necessary. I've done it four times on four machines, so I've got it down to an art. Anyway, I copy all my mish map files and book files where they need to go. I run the editor and it says some meshes are missing. I'm not worried about this. I have the custom meshes, I just haven't installed them. Anyway, after fixing some unpublished skins, I run the dang thing and it works fine. Until it crashes. After that, I can't get the mish to run from the editor AND I can't run T3 at all. I get the "Thief Deadly Shadows has stopped working error" as well as some error boxes stating that there are three files (one is Garrett and one is GARBOW) missing LOD files (?????), and four static meshes missing. I also get a Viktoria error that says a triangle group serial archetype index is out of range (-11)? I usually Run the game by XBox, I just did it by the joystick icon to see if I would get errors. With the Xbox option, it just crashes.
Is this all mesh related?? Oh, and if it is mesh related, then why can't I run the game itself either?

While waiting I thought I would uninstall everything and reinstall. Now, it won't reinstall correctly either. It won't play at all from the icon, whether I use Run as Administrator or not. Vista really makes me mad.

There should already be a couple of Vista/Dual Core threads around here, also for T3Ed. It's important to make sure that every exe is bound to only one core (use some Dual Core Optimizer for it). Concerning the missing files, I can only guess that more files are missing than the one it shows to you. Did you create a complete backup of the T3Ed setup or is there a chance something is missing?

Caradavin, I suggest you to:
1-) Delete from your home partition everything related to TDS (of course, make a backup of what interest you)
2-) Make a new installation of TDS, all must be new, and untouched. Then follow the Komag's guide to set a new version of T3Ed (copyinh the TDS files and overwriting the folder with what it's contained in thief3editorrelease_jan2005.zip, then doing the modifications specificated in the guide)
3-) Start this vanilla (new, or fresh installation) editor to see if it works by itself, without any add.
4-) If the editor goes on, and starts correctly, then you can try to add your personalization one by one, until you get what of that ones gives the error (for example your persona Static Meshes folder, then your MatLib folder, et cetera)

From my own experience, Vista is likely to make a mockery of this anyway - you need most things set to XP compatibility just to get them to load, and fairly important things like updating the gamesys and creating mission objectives are going to be a real pain in the ass (if they work at all).
And the majority of (self made) additional content will have to be converted on another PC, because Vista just flat out wont allow 3DS Max 5 to run (or at least, I couldn't get it to allow to the license manager to run, so the program itself would just quit out).

Could you be a littlt bit more specific on this? What are the problems on Vista concerning gamesys and objectives?

I know all about the Core issues, but it has not been an issue for me. Are you saying that the t3.exe and T3Main.exe should be assigned to separate cores. I figured this was a compatibility/registry/missing files issue. I could be wrong. I have Sims 3 and it had some issues, too, and core was mentioned, but I reinstalled it and got rid of custom content and it's perfect now. I'm guessing that custom content is part of the issue, in that it's missing and the editor doesn't like it - or Vista doesn't like it. When I uninstall TDS, and restart the computer, it still says "Uninstall Thief 3" on the launcher. This tells me it's registry related, and I know I saw a thread somewhere on that, maybe it was Eidos forums. I'll check there. I backed up all the maps and books, but I did not back up the ibts. I will need to boot up the old laptop and get those ibts, do you think that could fix it? Won't I need to name them still? I wasn't certain. I mean, I had the correct installation on my old laptop, should I do the vanilla (if I CAN :grr:) and then rewrite content files with my old ones then?

This has been an issue since I got this damned laptop. It is like I don't have permission to do stuff to my own computer. I cannot delete certain registry keys. I cannot even change their permissions! I called customer service about this and all I hear is "That's not supposed to happen." Well, no duh. This also causes a very annoying issue where I cannot install certain files or games because it says my appdata folder is inaccessible. I've tried every suggestion online I've found to fix this to no avail. Without being able to delete that registry key, I cannot "vanilla". Any suggestions??:nono:

You have Administrator rights and it does that?
Caradavin on 9/1/2010 at 01:47
Yeah. It's a standard account. I have a separate admin account because I don't believe in using admin while on internet. However, I have admin permissions and all.
I did get Thief to install and work finally, without deleting the reg. key. I installed the editor, and am installing the mods before I continue in Komag's tut (again). I will let you know how it goes. But if I do all this only to get a crash later on which results in not being able to use either, I will be at a total loss.
