Hating myself for being one of the few people who atually likes to see positive activities here on the DX forums, I'm going to attempt to dirrect this thread back to it's topic.
I recently started a game where I mastered rifle skills as quickly as possible, for the sole purpose of seeing if I could make positive use out of the assault rifle. That thing, along with the plasma rifle, always bothered me, but for different reasons. I never seemed to be able to make effective use out of it, becaues by the time I'd mastered rifles, I was using solely the sniper rifle and kept the assault rifle around more for novelty than anything else. But having mastered rifles before even being captured by mj12 i've discovered that it becomes immensely useful. Normally the fact that it never fires less than 5 rounds at a time, and generally takes around 20-30 rounds to kill someone considering it's absurdly low damage and and inherent inaccuracy (along with recoil), bothered the hell out of me. At master level I've never felt more secure running blindly out into a firefight. 10 shots is generally the most I ever have to use to kill someone, and one burst of 5 if I have the time to aim at the head. And with reload, clip, and silencer mods, the AR becomes a beast. Not quite to the same standards as it is in SS2, but an anti-personel powerhouse to be sure. On top of that, ammo is seemingly most abundant for the AR as compared to nearly every other type in the game.
I'm thinking now that I have to to a run through with heavy mastery, just to see what benefit I can get from the plasma gun.

I'm a DXMP player (though I haven't played in forever) and I have to ask.... why in the blue heck are you aiming for the head?! Aim for the feet, at least that's the way it is in MP. You aim for the feet and it takes out the legs, or will just kill them as it causes spray damage...
Though I could be completley off base here as I play(ed) DXMP, and haven't played singleplayer in quite the while......

Are you talking about the Assault Rifle or the plasma rifle? I'm talking about the AR. When I play SP I'm always a massive ammo conservationalist, so I always attempt to use the least ammount of shots, and the head does it. Apparently in the military they teach double tapping, where you you put one in the head and one in the chest, or something like that, in DX, with it's pansy fuckin 7.62mm rounds, it's more like quintuple tapping... only sometimes you have to do it twice.

I only use the AR for the 20mm shells. I kept it along with the stealth pistol just because I had to find something to use my extra silencer/recoil/laser mods on.
I wish they made the mods a little more versatile, in example rockets which target by laser (ala HL), and gained manouverability through accurcy mods. Maybe even a range/scope combo to turn the GEP into a mortar :p
