Ok, so my backup PC is lame:
AMD Sempron 2500+ @ 1.75 GHZ Socket A, 256 kb (lol) L2, 166 Front side bus
1 gig Kingston (2 x 512 MB) RAM DDR 333
128 MB Sapphire 9800 PRO
Soundblaster Audigy 2zs w/EAX 4/HD
Anyway, my AMD 64-based rig is taken apart for modifications, so I am gaming w/this P.o.S for now. Used to be, it would BARELY run DX:IW. I am talking 640x480, no bloom, under 30 frames. :erg: 1024x768 w/bloom was a slideshow.
*sigh*. My AMD 64 wasn't running it MUCH better, but I was able to play on a nice res, and have eye candy on. Anyway, it's been a while since I played this game. I re-installed as I just beat this first DX last week. FIred up IW, and guess what? 1024x768, multi-sampling (anti-alising's alias) X 2, all on High......gettting WELL over 40 frames, and never dropped below 38. Why? Same hardware. Haven't reformatted this thing since I played IW on it last time. Still using Catalyst drivers.....I dunno. Anyone know why my performance would improve so dramatically like this?

I have almost the same config, same CPU, half the RAM you have (though mine is DDR400, if that makes a difference), and a Radeon 9550 with 256Mb of dedicated RAM. The game runs fine at 1024×768 with full details and stuff... :weird:
I'd suggest checking/reinstalling the GPU drivers, or a clean reinstall, perhaps just a HD defrag... Formatting the HD sounds quite radical imho...

make sure you dont have conflicting FSAA settings, for example forcing 2x in the driver control panel and 4x in the game settings..

you guys aren't reading. My performance IMPROVED. A lot. I found it weird that you want me to fix it.
