I guess I'm lucky in that I enjoyed, say, the action sequences in The Matrix as well as the action setpieces in the second and third Bourne movies (although the latter admittedly on TV rather than at the cinema). To me, the different filming styles at best bring out different qualities and engage me differently, but they both have something going for them.

People love to criticise Zak Snyder until the cow comes home, but at least he can fucking shoot action competently, unlike Bay.
Yesss, I just watched Watchmen the other day and the action scenes are very good. Especially the scene where the police get Rorschach surrounded in the appartment. Overall it was a good film I thought. I've never read the comics and was prepared that it would be a tad long.

At least back then this shit
pretended to make sense.
I think I know what you mean. An actionfilm doesn't need to be realistic but it at least has to follow its own internal logic. I wouldn't say there's less of that these days though.

Is dodging fucking rockets the new bullet time?
Oh come on, surely a gamer wouldn't find this completely unbelievable. If whoever is shooting the rocket doesn't have enough sense to aim at the targets feet then ofcourse the rocket will be dodged. :P

Koki, in what film were they dodging rockets? Keep in mind that stuff like Iron Man, Transformers, misc. films where characters have superpowers don't count.
If you're talking about Crank, keep it mind that the filmmakers consciously made it to be like an arcadey OTT modern console game. Hence the invulnerability of Statham's character.

Get out. I'll pick QoS over any Matrix sequel any day.
Talk about totally missing the point. We're talking about the quality of just the action scenes, not the overall film.
rachel on 21/7/2009 at 11:55
Precisely. The Matrix sequel were a mess of CGI, QoS had actual action scenes.
Obviously it's subjective, I actually like shaky-cam (although it can be overdone, Star Trek I'm looking at you) and it pretty much never bothers me. I found the QoS intro car chase to be particulary well done.

Ditto. I never understand when people say action scenes in shaky-cam are hard to follow. I've never watched an action sequence where I couldn't tell who was punching who for example.

I quit watching Resident Evil 2 when the hero chick of the movie began karate-kid-ing zombies in shaky cam with punch and kick scenes that lasted less than a second. I just couldn't follow what the fuck was going on. Why the hell was she flailing her members in all directions hitting everything around I have no idea, but maybe it's just me. I do like classic action film shooting. 'Splosions are 'splosions and you can see them in their whole glory without the camera shaking side by side trying to tell you "imagine that you're there man!!! whooohaaaa ain't it cwooolawesome?!". Also, you can't beat the lone commando that kicks the shit out of everything during the whole movie. :p

I can already see a drill sergeant saying this once jump-boots become common accessories.

Yes,
but it's also absolutely bloody horrible when you see the same explosion several times from different angles. It's like "Well we set up 14 cameras to make sure we don't fuck it up cos we can't blow the building up twice, so lets use as much footage from every angle as we possibly can!" The result is, instead of "Kaboom!" we get "Kaboooo-boooo-booo-kaboooo-kaboooo-booooo-ooom!" Horrible.

Oh, if action movies don't count then I have to apologize. No rocket-dodging. David, please, close this thread.

There's a difference between Schwarzie wearing Bullet-repellant™ sunscreen in Commando and Tony Stark dodging a tank shell thanks to his godamn armored suit...
