I played System Shock 2 a long time ago, but never finished it. I found it again yesterday and loaded it on my XP machine and want to play it again. I got it working just fine, but now I am at the place where you can choose the Marines, OSA, and Navy. Do you guys have a recommendation as to what I should do??? I was thinking about Marines to be honest. I just finished Bioshock and pretty much used the shotgun most of the game. I don't remember what I did a long time ago to be honest. This game doesn't look that bad for such an old game to be honest. I downloaded System SHock 1 portable to play on my laptop, but I can't get over how horrible it looks, so I probably won't play that. Thanks in advance for your help.

What makes you think that there is some kind of 'right way' to play the game? If you're faced with a choice, then make a decision and go along with it. It's not as if it's impossible to finish the game depending on which branch you choose; that choice will only influence which skills will you start the game with. Besides, during the game you can upgrade your character any way you want to, and your initial choice won't have any influence in that.
Also, it must suck being a graphics whore :p

I'm not really a graphics whore to be honest. I really haven't been into games as long as some of you have. My first game was Warcraft II from Blizzard and I enjoyed the hell out of that. I guess that was back in 1996 or 1997 or so. I didn't get a real computer until 1995 though. Some of you have probably been doing this ALOT longer than I have. I am really not that much of a gamer to be honest. There are VERY few games that truly interest me beyond a couple of levels and System SHock 2 was one of those games. The main reason I wanted to play System Shock 1 was because I wanted something to play on my laptop....my laptop is not very modern to be honest and it won't play newer games at all. Because of Bioshock, I just recently got back into gaming. Probably the last two games I truly enjoyed were Starcraft and System SHock 2. I have played a few others, but they just didn't hit me like Starcraft and System Shock 2 did. I am glad that I found this forum. Now it gives me a place to go if I get stuck in System Shock 2 this go around. I never actually finished the game the first time, but I think I got pretty far. I remember my son watching it with me when he was young and it scared him so bad he had to leave the room until I was done killing the zombies or whatever they are. That was fun:)

When you say things like 'I can't get over how horrible it looks', you can't expect not to be labeled a graphics whore. Because if that's the main reason for you not to play the game, then you're losing a hell of a game just because of the graphics. For most people here, the frustrating part is getting the game to work.
As for SS2, just go ahead and make your choices. It's a lot more fun to play the game without having other people telling you what to do. Then you can come here and tell us about your experiences playing the game, we always like to read stuff like that :)

I doubt he will make it far in SS2 this time. I mean look at his role playing! Look at it! He goes into the System Shock forum to tell people how horrible their beloved game looks. Jesus. It's like going into the Many brain chamber and asking the psi overlords if they do it with Japanese girls. What with the tentacles and all?!

I honestly didn't mean to offend anybody. I will give System Shock 1 another try. Will it work with a mouse??? That is probably a dumb question, but I hoenstly don't know. Thanks in advance for your help.

For your first time through I recommend Navy, focusing on standard weapons. You will be the least resource constrained that way, and the early part of the game will be easier. Marine gets to be interesting later when you get to play with a lot of heavy weapons, but early on you'll be bashing everything with the wrench. OSA is interesting but harder, and it's a different playing style. I wouldn't recommend it to a first time player, especially if you are used to playing shooter style because of Bioshock.

We're very touchy-feely around here regarding System Shock ;)
Yes, it will work with a mouse.

Yes, but it doesn't have mouse look, if that's what you mean. In SS1, you basically use the mouse to steer as you're moving forward, which takes some getting used to.

I never use the mouse to steer... I just use it to shoot and to interact with the world. I steer with the keys.
