Good of you to offer, thanks. I think the pics Muzman and Kolya provided are as good as any for real-world references for color but of course you do have the luxury of creating for a sci-fi world so you could just try to match the original smeared look. If the option exists with the program you are using maybe you could even "sample" a section of color from the original textures.
I guess you could say for me color variation matters enough that I notice, but it isn't important for the pattern to match any real life example.
And for the record, you mentioned something about having fixed transparency issues at the cost of more polygonal-looking leaves, but I think re: shape the new leaves are if anything an improvement.

In general, updating facial textures is much, much harder than any other kind of texture, because such a large percentage of our brain is dedicated to facial recognition. Sure, it's not like it would keep me from using SHTUP with it's other significant improvements because of that one thing;)
