I wouldn't call
Shock scary
Except in the case of invisible spiders.
But yes, that is an accurate assessment, and I think what makes Shock superior. Random patrols + never-ending spawning + nowhere to be safe.

Are there other horror games that use this concept?
Any decent undead-themed Thief mission.

I totally disagree. Dead Space is a pretty cool game, don't get me wrong, but it relies, as most games these days do, on scripted events. As catbarf mentioned in the opening post, Dead Space has no spawning / random patrols. You wipe out an area and you can sit around and shit for all eternity. There's no feeling of having to keep moving.
Dead Space also relies a bit on the "Doom" style of horror, which is to say, "monsters randomly pop out because they just happened to be hiding there". Even Bioshock has that a BIT, but is closer to System Shock 2 - the feeling that this is all happening "real time". You can walk into a room in Shock 2 and see a hybrid beating a corpse, or searching something out. Even Bioshock has that with the little sisters and Big Daddies wandering around - though that's mostly (all?) scripted.
I meant in terms of atmosphere as in being stuck alone on a ship with little or no help from any other survivors, in which System Shock and System Shock 2 both were similar in that regard. Parovski comes to mind as well as Delacroix, William Bedford Diego, Tommy & Rebecca.
As for respawning in System Shock 2, I hate it. In System Shock 1 it was perfect because it wasn't overdone. In System Shock 2 you clear out a whole hallway, you turn the corner and come back and the hallway is full of mutants again.
I think as soon as you disable Xerxes security or as soon as SHODAN takes over Xerxes the respawning should stop and Hybrids should be forced to use the elevator like the rest of us. Popping randomly around each corner get me angry. If you leave the level and come back
sure respawning is fine because then it seems at least slightly realistic that the hybrids and other mutants found their way back down while you were away.
Midwives were pretty annoying with their green laser bs and spiders that don't die in a single shotgun hit (what the heck).
Oh and I love the whole running low on ammo in System Shock 2 it really forces you to appreciate each and every bit of loot you pick up so much more unlike other games.

The hybrids and other denizens have nothing to do with Xerxes; it's the Many who keep repopulating the ship with them. Having respawning stop as you suggested wouldn't make any sense.

They're obviously not like Earth spiders; they're annelids, and as such are more resilient to damage.

I cared considerably less for the characters in Dead Space. Including / especially the protagonist.

Ridiculous exaggeration aside, it's not like you can see the entire place at once. It's perfectly logical that you could be on one end of the map while a hybrid is at the other. They move around. It never felt out of place or over the top for me.

While I thought the spawn level was generally pretty good in SS2 and contributed to a feeling of dread and nervousness I'd be hard pressed to defend it in all areas. Certainly the notorious respawn in the engineering 1->2 transition corridor is badly overdone (exacerbated because it is so linear that avoidance is impractical) and could have used being turned down significantly.
Kolya on 14/12/2009 at 00:17
Avoidance is possible and planned for in the architecture of that corridor. The spawning is hard there but the hatch in the middle suggests it was intentional.
What I really miss is hybrids climbing ladders. Shouldn't happen in all cases, but when they can see you and shoot at you up somewhere, you'd expect they'd be able to climb a ladder once in a while instead of standing there cursing you.

I wonder, is that something that could be fixed with a mod? Or is it beyond the scope of what can be modified?

Dark Engine AIs are grounded to the floor. It's an engine limitation. Unlike the player, they can't be affected by the physics system (as far as I know).
