From a truly balanced perspective, the lore of the THIEF Universe is equally important as the gameplay design philosophy...
Yeah, you guys are right. I've just become jaded and I'm not that bothered any more. I'd care more if I thought the game was actually going to bring back any of the feelings I had playing Thief 1 and 2 but by now it's clear that it really isn't, regardless of how good it is or how much fun it is - the entire approach has been so off that to me it's something completely different. It's not Thief as we know it.

That's just sad and/or crazy.

It's no more sad or crazy than being drawn into a well written book. I don't think there is anything sad or crazy about wanting an experience to be something more than just another round of 'disposable' entertainment, play it once and toss it.

If you wanted to live in a book that'd be just as sad.

Who said anything about living in it?

One of the main reasons why modern games suck is that people like the worlds in those game more than the games themselves. They demand huge worlds and realistic visuals because they think that's the only way to get immersion. Producing those is slow and expensive, so developers can no longer make something unique because it's risky. Also, when people don't really care about actually playing the game, the developers don't really care about game design. So the mechanics take the first hit there. Then, when you add the visuals on top of that, nobody cares about trying to seamlessly blend game mechanics with realistic animations, and the mechanics take the second hit there. That's when you get contextual jumping and cover modes. The only reason they exist is because someone wanted to make cool animations without putting any effort into implementing them in the game.

Of course, no one did...He's attempting to rationalize his bias, by insinuating a false mental deficiency upon those who love the THIEF Universe.

It really depends. I think they got the right balance with Skyrim. A game for the masses doesn't necessarily have to suck. You can have a huge world with really unique quests and characters, and still sell like hot cakes.

It's about healthy escapism, no one said anything about living in it. I like spending an hour or 2 a day in that universe, I'm sure anyone who loves any game feels the same way.

I have no bias Vae. I don't really care at all.

I'm surprised more people haven't picked the "personal attack" one, so I picked it because it's funny.
I mean, come on. Only 5 votes for that besides mine? Is Thiefgen getting soft?
demagogue on 7/1/2014 at 09:22
ThiefGen has always had a hardcore vs softcore side at war with one another. This was always my interpretation of the great Clan Larcenio Haul vs Clan FooFoo battles. Of course I joined the coolest one.
A comedy option in a poll is a longstanding TTLG tradition in any forum though, I think.
