Also I probably will never OC these puppies. My main concern is that they last as long as I play Thief, which could be quite a long time.;)
Well I recon a nice quiet 120mm fan will sit on top of both of the aluminium cooler/s, to keep things nice and cool...

nb. ive just upgraded to a nice shiney Asus P5N32-E, nForce 680i, 3x pci-e slot motherboard, got space on there for another 8800gtx and a pci-e_5900 for playing thief :-)

I guess I shall try them too. I even found an old GeForce FX5500 and installed it, but after about 30 to 40 minutes of playing, crash again, with the D3D error. That was with the 162.18 drivers from 6/29/07.
I'll let you know how the 84.56 versions do...
Hit Deity on 6/8/2007 at 03:43
For the record, those 84.56 drivers appear to work. I don't get the crash with the "D3D not reporting texture memory..." error and not using safe_texture_manager, but at the moment, I don't have an easy way to check the resolution limit problem with another monitor. My LCD is "stuck" at 1440x900, so I can't check anything above 1024x768 on it with the supported Thief2 resolutions.
In a "side by side" comparison of image quality between the 84.56 and 162.18 drivers, alas, the newer ones (162.18) seem to look better. But, mind you, I was comparing them from memory as I could not remember the key combo for a screenshot ingame and I don't have Dromed installed to try screen_dumps from there. A true test will involve some higher resolutions, because honestly, my LCD at any other resolution than its native 1440x900 sucks ass.
So, I think we're making progress anyway. I'll try to snag a monitor from one of my kids on my next day off of work and do a screenie test for further confirmation.

I have finally been able to do an A-B comparison between the 7950GT (which looks like all 6xxx and 7xxx cards) and an 8000 series card. The 7950GT has bad sky, and certain susceptible dark textures are rendered badly. Most textures are OK. I can ignore these problems. The 8000 cards render all dark textures badly, so they are a real mess. (

In 8 years Ive had the following cards, which thief played on perfectly as far as I can remember.
Geforce ddr, Geforce2, Geforce3 ti, Geforce4 ti4200, 9700pro, 6800AGP, 6800GT, X1800XT, 7800GT and 7900GT...
Hello everyone, and sorry for bringing this 10years old thread back to life :)
I'm doing a weird thing: in the era of New Dark engine i want to setup my old laptop to play Thief "the way it meant to be played". Its Dell D800 (Pentium M 1600Mhz, 1Gb DDR, GF 4200GO 64Mb DDR, 80Gb HDD, Win XP / Win 98)
Problem is that Thief II 1.18 won't show proper sky's, stars and have green mud in shadows:

Maybe i'm doing smth wrong? Need proper driver? Win XP have smth about 4*** version and Win 98 8*** version. Both work like i've shown above.
p.s. i found that my 2010 laptop with intel gma 4500 works perfect, dithering, stars proper clouds no green mud. But that's another story.

Well if i was looking for ddfix-style thing i would install 1.25. I'm not talking about game modification, i'm looking for a proper old driver for an old videocard.

I think some 4x.xx and 5x.xx drivers should work properly, but not with all nvidia cards, so if you really insist on doing this, prepare for downloading pretty much all drivers that support your card and trying them out one by one, hoping that one will be good.
also I'd like to note that while I usually am all in for doing useless things as long as they are fun, in this case, I would recommend just giving up and using NewDark - while we could argue about T1/TG not being close enough to vanilla when running with the new engine, T2 is 99.9% authentic, so there is really no reason to use 1.18, unless you absolutely have to use win9x.

Thief isn't supposed to look like that? lol. I may have been playing wrong for years.

That greenish glow isn't supposed to be there with a good video card or proper DD settings. I don't see that in New Dark. I'd take a screenshot, but for some reason even when I up my gamma to the max, the screenshots come out in the darkest setting (even with Bandicam)
