I'd say at best I'm just a casual gamer, the last game I played being BioShock and that's it.
I played BioShock on XBOX and to me it didn't seem particularly dumbed down at all. In fact, compared to other recent console games I've played it was a step up. As far as difficultly as relating to atmosphere in a video-game I think this is an incredibly subjective balance, and while one person may find it contribute to the overall atmosphere to find you could be killed AT ANY MOMENT in the first hour by the SMALLEST thing ITS THAT DANGEROUS, others are going to find that exceptionally annoying.
Now when I played BioShock I died at least 15 times trying to kill the first Big Daddy. I wish I had been able to play System Shock 2 directly after BioShock for comparison but oh well.
I think it's also important to remember limitations of technology at each point these games were made. Imagine if System Shock 1 was (somehow) made today, you know, the same team, the same nascent video-game culture, but with more powerful computers. I suspect it would look and play vastly different, and some people may say it's a 'dumbed down' version.
That was a silly thought experiment.

Ta-dah. You're the target demographic. Take a bow.

That proves ZB is right, then.

Geez... it's not like it's ever been any secret that Bioshock was a calculated play for the non-hardcore console gamer market.

Well I didn't know that when Ken Levine still came by to sell it as SHODAN's pajamas.

I just can't understand...
A game where its phsyically impossible to actually die...
not dumbed down....
Now if the splicers could destroy the vita chambers... (sorry repeating another post)

You can remove vita chambers from the game, after the patch. That was a good thing. With them in the game, if we had the patience we could kill Big Daddies with a wrench.

You're just proving what I said before. Today's gamers will get easily annoyed and move on to the next game, whereas older gamers will generally accept and like the challenge. Hence the tendency from game developers to try and please (i.e., dumb the games down) the ones who will most likely quit.

To be fair, you could do this in System Shock as well, and even System Shock 2 to a sightly lesser extent (since they had a cost).
But then, I haven't played Bioshock, so I'm probably missing something.

Yeah, the main difference is that getting killed in Bioshock is actually beneficial, since it fills you half up on health and "psi".
