What is a good direction to go with a beginner's character build? - by Spartangrey

I don't want to screw myself over in the long run because of simply not knowing what a good build was...

I don't think there are 'good' or 'bad' builds. SS2 can be played in an infinity of ways, and it's even possible to finish it using only a wrench; there is no 'formula' to beat the game. So it's very unlikely that you'll screw yourself in the long run.

^ Agreed
....but if you have no clue what you're doing you can use the following guideline...as I see them anyway:
If you're a typical doom/quake/unreal FPS gamer and ur newbish with ss go marines
If you're a patient person and quite newbish, go navy
If you're teh shit when it comes to stealth, resource management and you're not so newbish go OSA
Of course none of these have anything to do with how much you will enjoy the game as D'Arcy implied but if its your first exposure...

Navy is the more balanced route ... so it's sort of a good default way unless you are otherwise particularly moved to take the trigger-happy (marine) or sneaky (OSA) route, IMO.
edit: Anyway, it's the one I went with first, for that reason, and I was happy with it. I liked being hit with some of the limitations and being encouraged to go alternative ways on my first run (but not too far). It's part of what makes SS2 what it is.

I went Marine first, it is easy to manage your upgrades since you'll be concentrating on the weapon upgrades and of course stuff like repair, maintenance, etc. I think it is a good first runthrough choice, then Navy can come next, with it's more technical + shooting nature.

Yeah-I found Marines with the +2 strength, +2 standard and +1 maintenance (my usual route) got most of the basics covered-+2 strength so your wrench does good damage and you can packrat more easily-very useful in the beginning with the lack of stackable crisps and coke cans. Standard weapons of 3 lets you use the shotgun, taking some of the strain off the pistol, and if you run Straylight's mod lets you use the assault rifle too.
And +1 mainenance to keep your guns going.
Of course, you'll probably want to avoid repair entirely, put some points into hacking (lots of goodies in those secure crates!) and a few points into modify. Odds are you won't need to max out modify though.
------
Of course, if you're REALLY worried about messing up your skill splurges, just play it on easy. You'll have so many cyber mods to spend that you'll probably run out of things to splurge them on!

I honestly don't think that Marine or Navy are that different of character classes. Each can be specialized to be like the other.
Psi certainly starts out as rather different, but again I think the game is forgiving enough that it can be specialized to be like the others. . . or not.

Even on easy isn't it impossible to fill up even the psi tiers by themselves? How high can you get before you run out of cms again?
Bjossi on 30/8/2007 at 20:47
There are ~850 cyber modules in the game if I remember correctly, for that you can buy every tier and PSI power on Easy. That is assuming you know the location of every single cyber module pickups.

wish there was a way to keep the cms high but keep the difficulty high as well.
