A discussion has come up on (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Deus_Ex) Deus Ex talk page on Wikipedia regarding where Deus Ex's cyberpunk inspirations came from, specifically William Gibson's works, or Ghost in The Shell. Does anyone have any citeable sources (not forum posts or hearsay, (EDIT: or "vibes")), ideally from people who worked directly on the game, that state where some inspirations came from?

Considering how heavily Ghost in the Shell was inspired by William Gibson, it seems like a moot point.

Hmm, personally, Deus Ex doesn't have a Gibson or Ghost in the Shell feeling at all for me.
Much more Illuminati.

Wintermute = Daedelus
Neuromancer = Icarus
WTF they combined into = Helios
Helios = Puppetmaster
There is comparative cyberpunk in 3 easy steps

Isn't there something like the Deus Ex Bible or some gamespot special where the creators went over everything that led up to the game? Maybe karmasutra's post-mortem?

Gamasutra. It's a pun. The site is about games. Get it?

Yeah, I forgot the name of the place, sorry.

The authors stated in numerous interviews that the plot of deus ex was inspired by all the insane consipracy theory rants you hear on talk radio and see on the internet. Basically they said "What if all that crazy stuff about the Illuminati and the Knights templar and Majestic 12 is actually true? What if all that stuff was true all at once?"

The mother-DX-article on gamespy. If you want to weed through it feel free, but other than that I couldn't tell you what specifically inspired DX other than things that were specifically lifted (ICE breaker as the hacking tool, for instance, which happened before DX anyway with SS.)

For what it's worth, "ICE breaker" wasn't actually a term used in any of Gibson's novels (at least not to the best of my recollection); it must have originated with later cyberpunk fiction or System Shock itself. He did coin the term ICE itself, though.
