Now, it seems that some people have disliked Deus Ex: Invisible War. While that's fair and jolly good since everyone has differing opinions on what makes a good game, I'm curious: if DE-IW had been released as an original game and not a sequel, would you honestly love it or hate it? I'm asking because I've yet to buy it (budget is rather low at the moment) and I'd like to know if expectations were just set too high for this game. So, if it would've been a stand-alone game, would you have appreciated it more? (Be honest now!)

I think that would have softened the blow, really, as the game really is more a console spin-off than actual sequel.

Yes. It would be the kind of game you'd like to see a sequel for because the concept showed great potential to be taken further.

No need for the sarcasm detector on this chap.
It would just been another one of those 'well, its kind of pretty' games that I'd play once or twice. Though no I wouldn't buy it if I had the choice. Kind of like how the only reason Moo3 sold so well was it was a sequel.
DX is very... unplayable. Long load times kill my adrenaline too much. Its like' hey its loading I should go for tea and when I'm back it will be done'. Normally this wouldn't matter so much except I have a pretty hefty system and the maps are so small without enough interesting things to do in them.
Hmm, I could go on but I trust you've heard all this crap before. No, the game would probably have flopped completely. DX:IW is comparable to Terminator3 in so many ways.

Obviously the reason that we around here have so much negative stuff to say about this game is because we have a previous game to compare it to. If there was no DX1, than DXIW would have been mind blowing. Not as much as DX1 was, but enough in its own right to make it a respectable game. As a sequel, it's less than the original, almost a step back, so I would conclude that it would do better as a stand alone. My thoughts on the game since I started playing it were that it was a good game, just not nearly as good as DX.

If I'd played this first, I would still be looking forward to the next one in the series. I just can't get into the 100% scripted adrenaline fests like Call of Duty, so DX:IW (flawed as it is) would be very welcome.

Oh it has nothing to do with my machine thegrommit. It has to do with small level sizes and the need to travel through multiple tiny levels with loading times > 30 seconds.
I'm one of the few running the damn thing over 1024x768. So I have no beef about how the tiny levels run... just the time spent loading them because they don't have cached textures and objects. There basically isn't any load time saving features of this game at all. Another 'feature' carried over from the xbox game.

Bypassing the CD check improves load times immensely. Though why it's done on every level load is beyond me :erm:

I always feel a little guilty when im downloading a crack for a game i own, no idea why. probably because i own every game a really really like and feel like the company will hate me for using a crack... but they are pretty useful... pre-patched system shock 2 cd check used to really piss me off it took about 1 minute on my old computer. and if a crack can make dx2 a bit faster i might have to get it.
maybe someone should release a mod that removes all reference to deus ex from the game, then people wont hate it so much. actually i would prefer it if someone fixed the title so it made gramatical sense.

You've never played a disk-based console before have you?
Level load times are one of the biggest complained about things on any console, and one of the reasons why there is a HD with cache space on it for the XBox (to cut down load times).
A steaming technology similar to what's used by Morrowind would have been a much smarter system. As I've said before, Splinter Cell has huge levels, there are a few load screens (usually at a point to switch levels, no going back from that point), but for the most part each area is huge.
The bottom line is that Ion Storm made a crappy engine, XBox or no XBox this game would have had problems. Just about any game ported from a console to the PC lacks the "long load times" problem because the kiddies with ADD who sit in front of these things all day wouln't keep playing it if they had to wait more than 20 sec for a level to load.
