I'm currently retro-binging NYPD Blue, just got started on Season 4. Holy blast from the past, Batman!

Just recently watched Picard ep 9 - holy crap. It is the worst garbage i have ever seen. Don't ask why i watched it - i have essentially written off the franchise some time ago. For some reason i can not fathom (read: really bored) - i watched the new one. And it is good (best thing since sliced bread in comparison, but that does not say much ... well, anything).
Picard season 2 is the worst Trek, period, and it's not even close. Terrible writing, terrible pacing, nonsensical plot, ugly cinematography, and a lead actor who clearly isn't up to the task. The scattered scenes with Q were pretty good, but like every other element of the story they had no build-up and no payoff. I love Captain Picard with every fibre of my being, but I hate
Star Trek Picard.
I gave up on
Discovery after season 3 although I like
Lower Decks. I'll guess I'll give
Strange New Worlds a chance. I just wish they would stop relying on constant references to other series and just create some new, good stories and characters.

Unfortunately, the new one has ST: TOS characters in it (Pike, Spock and the freshbloods: Uhura and Kirk) - which put me off at first to be honest (Spock! Again!). But it is fresh enough - so i gave it a pass on that front.
Too early to tell on just one episode - but i am surprisingly hopeful. So far it seems to be much better than the best episodes of Discovery - to the extent that trying to compare them feels inappropriate. Loved the aura of professionalism in the talky bits.
(in before it turns into shit)

I spent the weekend on Severance (on Apple TV+), a dystopian show where a new implant technology allows us to hermetically separate our work life and our personal life. It's as captivating and horrifying as it sounds, and absolutely riveting. The show manages to capture the tedium of office environments and make it both gorgeous and ominous, making you wonder what hides behind every turn of the labyrinthine corridors of the "severed" floor, and behind the smiles of its cultish managers... The photography and art style are ultra polished and framed to perfection (the Bell Works building and its atomic age vibes make for a perfect location for a show full of retro-futuristic mid-century-ish elements) and the cast brings everything together incredibly well. The finale also resolves enough of the mysteries to be satisfied, but leaves enough pending that you just can't wait for Season 2 to drop.
One of the best written shows of the year. Greatly recommended.

I second Severance, excellent unique sci-fi-ish show that is indeed riveting!

The Northman (2022) - 5/5
This film was utterly amazing. A simple story, but still cast in shades of grey. Cinematography, musical score, fight choreography, pacing - all top notch.
There's no shoehorned in Netflix-esque modern social agenda lecturing. Eg nothing to break immersion of the region specific, historical setting like having black lady jarls.
Scream 5 (2022) - 3/5
Well executed modern day sequel/soft-reboot of the series, for the most part.
Some noticeable brainfarts of the plotting revolved around the slaying
of a cop. She goes to protect herself with a kitchen knife instead of you know, a gun, which most US police probably have readily on hand. She radios for back up to swarm her house... but nobody shows up until well after she's slain.
The identities of the killers I could see miles away, because it's still a modern day mainstream Hollywood film.
Of course they're going to be the straight white people. They're too deadly afraid to make POCs and/or LGBT be the villains.
Quite a focus in your reviews there.

I just saw Everything Everywhere All At Once last night

https://i.imgur.com/LCMT8DS.pngIt was superb and probably one of my favorite recent films. Fantastically executed, full of genuine surprises, both funny and poignant moments that do not compromise one another. I feel like I need to read some essays about it, since there is a lot to unpack there.

I also finally managed to see it, which I had to delay for a while since I've been stuck in Istanbul for four weeks and I found out Turkish society seems to be fine with letting people smoke in theatres. Anyway.
I liked it a lot, it's got great pacing almost consistently throughout and the narration is truly original, which alone makes it worth it. But I wished it was more out there and didn't wallow so much in the usual Hollywood feel-good tropes. In general I loved the well-balanced narration and direction but was disappointed with the writing.
