Caught up with watching Captain Marvel - worth the price of admission and better than I'd been expecting given some of the criticism I'd seen online. As others have said the supporting cast do wonders and it only really hits the high notes because it links in to the previous films in the franchise. As a new character she almost seemed too powerful by the end - enjoyable to watch and probably a criticism that could be levelled against other characters (wrong universe but Superman sprang to mind more than once). 8 / 11.
Netflix have been pushing it at every opportunity so I decided to give the Umbrella Academy a shot. Another comic series I've absolutely no familiarity about and I expected a show geared towards teen stereotypes acting as superheroes. What I didn't expect was a series that does suffer from youth angst but with characters that have enough depth and personality to keep me hooked to the season finale. It's not perfect by any means and there's a huge need for suspension of disbelief at times but it's a story told very well. The fact the soundtrack and choice of songs is fantastic only helps - probably my favourite of any recent series. I heard a rumour that Season 2 will also be worth watching when it comes out.

Isn't it just a rehash of Charlie X's School for Mutantes?

Nope - not at all. I thought it would be based on the trailers but it's closer to Watchmen than X-Men

Yeah, I really liked that movie too, it's very much worth watching.

I watched it on a flight. I remember thinking this is kind of ham-fisted and gimmicky and I don't think I like it, or at least no more than a third-tier made for tv movie... But I couldn't stop watching it and following along anyway. Yeah it's a gimmick, but it kind of works. I'm not sure any other movie could ever pull it off again, as it's kind of a one-trick hook, but if there were only one movie to do it, this did the job.

Same.. and was pleasantly surprised, but only in some ways. I think if it weren't for certain characters (Klaus maybe only, with certain other characters as sometimes highlights) I would have catbarfed this one. Ellen Page was a let down.. I mean, how many times can a person keep watching Juno? I want to like her, but.. ehh. Either way, it kept my interest enough to see it through to the end of the season. Possibly next, once I've worn out the best ones.

I have been watching Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States. I've watched 10 of 12 episodes. I'd like peoples' opinion on it, but it is such a loaded gun, I wonder if it should have a separate thread.

Never heard of it, but it sounds exactly like the kind of stuff I'd watch. I'll keep an eye out to see if I can find it.

I finally watched Tim Burton's Big Fish yesterday, it's been sitting on my shelf for years so long it was still in the plastic wrapping.
Holy shit how it wrecked me. Now, I'm a relatively easy crier especially for movies I love and see repeatedly, but it's not often a movie gets me bawling like that in the first viewing. I absolutely loved this film. It's insane. The mix of fantasy and reality, the editing, the whole thing completely ensnared me.
I haven't really followed Burton's latest developments (I pretty much bailed on him after the extreme disappointment that was Alice in Wonderland) but my goodness this is probably his best or very close, with the visuals giving just the right touch of supernatural to help the story, not drown it. The cast was delightful all around. And this ending, seeing it all come together... *sniff*
What a wonderful film...

Go to Netflix and scroll down to documentaries, or search.
