I'm curious if we have any board gamers, so I posted here instead of in GenGaming because it's a bit off topic for there, I think (Al, if I'm wrong feel free to move it).
So after getting addicted to Settlers of Catan a few years ago, my family has gone board game bonkers. We don't have much money to spend on entertainment, but I figure between self-gifting at Christmas and gifts from friends, birthday gifts, etc. we probably have nearly $2000 worth of board games. If you think I'm talking about Monopoly and Risk, this thread is probably not for you (or maybe it is, because with all the ridiculously fun board games out there right now, I feel bad for you).
So I was thinking - I'll list the games we have here, and you guys do the same and maybe we can talk strategy, etc. Plus, I could use a few recommendations since we play a lot when the fam comes to visit here at the hospital.
Settlers of Catan (including Cities & Nights, and Seafarers)
Kandamere (A Catan Adventure)
Livingston
Castles of Mad King Ludwig
Tammany Hall (my personal favorite)
Ticket to Ride
Shadows Over Camelot
Dominion, and several expansions (technically a card game, but usually sold with board games)
Nevermore (ditto)
Firefly
Star Wars: X-Wing
Star Wars: Rebellion
High Noon Saloon
Dungeon (TSR Retro)
Carcassonne
10 Days in Europe
Payday
Clue
Flibbix
On the way from Amazon this week: Codenames, Dice City, and Resistance.

I love Risk. However, it has been 20 or more years since anyone would play it. Mexican Train (dominos) is the closest to a board game (not really a board game) I still play. Cards Against Humanity is a good one too. I also have very fond memories of “Clue”. Of course Monopoly and Life are main stays.

I've been playing Sneaky Snacky Squirrel and Hungry Hungry Hippo this weekend.

Zombie Dice is a great game, easy to learn and quick to play. If we are including card games then Sushi-Go and Once Upon a Time are really fun, my whole family enjoys these.
Other board games that I have and can recommend :
Stone Age - euro style resource collecting game
Conquest of Nerath -D+D based Risk style game, but much better than Risk.
Smallworld
Smash Up - deck building game, really good fun
Castle Panic - co-op tower defence game
King of Tokyo - great fun dice rolling game, good entry level game for ppl who say they arent into board games.
hmm too much fun maybe

There's always Tabletop Simulator as well as digital versions of board games.
Anyway, it's been a while (4+ months) since I last played a board game, but I do have some friends I play (
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/twilight-imperium-3rd-edition/) Twilight Imperium with a couple of times a year. It's not a game I'd recommend if you're less than 5 players, nor if you don't have an entire weekend to play it. But if you do have 5+ people and a weekend to play, the game can be a really fun experience (as long as people understand how to seperate their "allies" inevitably backstabbing them from how they'd behave outside the game).
We also play other games from time to time, with the latest of those sessions culminating with Agricola.
But the only thing that can make Monopoly remotely interesting to play is adding a ton of houserules.

As it turns out my roommate/buddy from college, his sister is married to the admin CEO guy of the BoardgameGeek.com. Long story short, they have an annual boardgame convention every year in Dallas where the whole family helps out & I used to join them. Anyway, we'd play a LOT of boardgames there.
Some of my favorites were
Carcassone, especially adding some additions & rpg house rules to it, Also a game you can play coop (beat your last highest score working together) if you don't want to compete for a change.
Ticket to Ride, making rail lines
Wings of Glory(?) iirc A cool ww2 fighter plane card game. Basically a card is a maneuver that lays on top of the last card, so you are 2 planes zig zagging around a table angling for a shot.
There's another ww2 one, normal pieces on a field, where your actions are cards. Action is quick.
Modern Art. Ymmv. You're auctioning for art. Auctions can actually be intense, so it's good for a game.
Some of the alt maps for Axis&Allies are fun too, Napolean wars, WW1, Roman empire. Worth mentioning I've made 3 myself on the pc version, Cold War in Asia, Iraq ISIS Crisis, and the Russian civil war. Basically wars with a ton of different factions.

It's not entirely (or at all) a board game, but have any of you ever played
Fiasco, the collaborative storytelling game? With a bunch of creative people that spark each other off, it's great fun.

If you're into co-operative stuff, (
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/eldritch-horror/) Eldritch Horror is an excellent game I shall be playing next weekend, with a nice Lovecraftian vibe. The players are a team of investigators travelling the world trying to stop a Great Old One or Outer God awakening and destroying the earth. Fantasy Flight did an earlier game, Arkham Horror, with much the same premise but on the scale of a single city. Eldritch Horror has a lot of the rough edges taken off, though, so if you've never played either I'd go straight for Eldritch.
Another great co-op game is (
http://www.zmangames.com/pandemic-universe.html?id=1726) Pandemic, where you try to stop diseases wiping out humanity. It had a bit of a comeback recently because they released a legacy version (where the outcome of games affects later ones) called, staggeringly, Pandemic Legacy. If that seems like a bit too much commitment, though, the base game is plenty of fun.
I'll second WingedKagouti for Twilight Imperium, too, I got a copy for Christmas :)

Pandemic is indeed a fantastic game- one of my favorites that I still bring out and play every once in a while.
For larger groups of people I really love
Avalon, which is a hidden-role game similar to the popular Werewolf or Mafia games except for a few main differences: nobody is every "killed" (i.e. nobody has to leave the game) and there is no need for a moderator role; players get more information to figure out who the bad guys are since players vote on each mission; and the "Merlin" role (Merlin knows eveybody's role but must subtly guide the good guys to a win) is a super-fun twist. Super fun, doesn't take long to play, takes 5 minutes AT MOST to teach new players. Best with 7-10 players.
My all-time favorite game is
Space Alert. It's for 4-5 people and you play it in real-time along with an audio recording. You're in a spaceship that's falling apart, and terrible aliens and meteors and viruses and other threats must be dealt with cooperatively with very little time to think about how to deal with them. Charging lasers, firing missiles, raising shields, fixing broken parts of the ship, and all working together at a very hectic pace. It's SO MUCH FUN and I can't recommend it more highly. Watch this short video and if you think you'll like it, you probably will: (

I used to play Warhammer 40K and Fantasy Battle a fair bit, but then it became a VERY expensive hobby and so I stopped. LOVED the back story stuff though.
More of late, I got the girlfriend hooked on a few board games. So the following board games get played every now and then:
* Cluedo
* Hang Jumble - My own creation. Per round, 1 person assigns a Hang Man puzzle on the screen (as in the other player watches from afar as they make their letter guesses etc, and the other player once it's their turn (usually after the hang man bit is done) assigns a jumble of letters (I use the letter tiles from Upwords) of a word to the other person for them to try to figure out. Each round this gets switched around.
* Monopoly - Playing by the 1 hour rule (only 3 houses needed before you can get a hotel). This one gets the most play.
* Upwords
Card Games:
* Go Fish
* Snap
