All tabbed browsers can easily be configured to run in the disgusting "each page in its own window" mode.
In Firefox: Tools->Options -> Tabs: Open new windows in a new tab instead [ ], Always show the tab bar [ ].

I use Firefox and almost never use tabs. Big part of that is due to me being too lazy to relearn muscle memory for quick switching of windows, I'm a huge alt-tab whore.

Ctrl+Tab is commonly used by a lot of programs to change documents, and was long before tabbed browsing became popular...

Except I almost never use programs that make use of that, so it's still a conscious action for me. That plus ctrl+tab isn't as easy to do, because I'd either have to use my pinkie to press ctrl or move my hand almost entirely off the keyboard to use my thumb.

I don't generally use a fingertip at all, I use the edge of my little finger to hold control.

I use my pinkie on ctrl. I don't recall it taking a while to get used to, though. Of course, everyone is different.

While Opera still allows for Ctrl + Tab to switch between tabs, mouse gestures are better. Right Click + Mousewheel is much easier. :)
