There's nothing stopping you from joining both guilds....personally, I have found them both to be a lot of fun. They both give you fairly easy quests at first so you don't get in over your head. Your weapon/armor skills would suit either guild.

No probs  You can join as many guilds as you want in the game, the only real restriction being that you can only join one of the Great Houses (Redoran, Hlaalu, Telvanni) and after you've joined one, you can never join any other, even if you get booted out of the original one. Of course, some guilds are enemies so you may find yourself caught in a conflict of interests and have to choose where your loyalties lie.

I'm playing as an Assassin (though more weighted towards a fighter/thief) at the moment, and having completed the Thieves' Guild, have just started Morag Tong and plan to do Hlaalu as well for the stronghold. I don't much like the Imperials, they tend to insist that I wear their crappy (and heavy) uniform, which is NOT helpful if you want to bring back a lot of loot from a particular quest. With my last character, a knight, I had to buy at least 6 Im perial cuirasses over and over when I ditched my existing one, just to get any Imperial guard to talk to me.

Wear whatever gives you the best armour class, no matter what combinations you choose.
