I've got a 19" monitor and a 9800 GT and while there are a couple of titles where I would have liked to have gotten 15% better performance, the only game that my computer really failed at was Crysis (on high; medium was fine).
I want to upgrade to a 285 GTX or so, but it's more just out of boredom if anything. It seems many new titles will be released with the Unreal Engine and my computer handles this engine very well.
What titles currently out would benefit much from upgrading?
It seems graphics technology reached a new level with HL2 + Far Cry, then evolved further with Crysis (albeit the game ran like shit for most), and almost seems to have stopped progressing at the present moment...?

GTA 4 doesn't have great graphics, but requires a great graphics card to run well... I can't really think of anything else you couldn't already max out on a 9800GT. I would say you already have a high-end card and generally speaking, buying top of the range really isn't worth it for the performance increase you get over the high-end stuff. I have a GTX260, pretty similar to your 9800GT, and GTA 4 is the only game with which I've been disappointed. I can max every other game I have, the most demanding being Stalker: Clear Sky, and that still runs perfectly on maximum.
Maybe you play different games to me but, unless you've got more disposable income than you know what to do with, I wouldn't bother upgrading just yet. Go skydiving, or give the money to charity or something.

I agree with what you've said.
For me, GTA4 runs fairly decently (though not perfectly) on medium.
I guess I would benefit somewhat if I could run on high. I've heard that some people with GTX 260s cannot run on high even. The biggest issue for me is the graphical anomalies (little grids, "proto-objects") in the distance (especially in dark lighting). Is it possible to eliminate these by cranking up the draw distance?

well here is my 2 pence
I have a leadtek GTX280 (575/1242/1080) which I have bios moded to (712/1458/1350) and it runs the 2 most demanding games Ive come across at 1680*1050, 0*AA(even 2xAA kills), details high, 40+ fps...
So I would say set you budget and then get the fastest card for that budget. So say £200, that would mean a GTX260-216 (620/1242/2000) or a stock GTX280(which you can overclock...

I think bikderdude misunderstood your question.
For my part - I say Mirror's Edge. The game is gorgeous and really benefits from a high end card.
