Ok, was just pondering this the other day, and I came to the conclusion that the moonsugar/skooma relation is that of Cocaine/Crack in real life. here are my reasons.
*Both Moonsugar and Cocaine are white powders, and while Crack is a rock, Skooma comes in a bottle so its fair to assume they contain hard crystals similar to crack.
*Cocaine and Moonsugar are both processed to form significantly more addictive and narcotic substances (crack, skooma)
*Moonsugar is depicted as a lighter, possibly social drug, like cocain... while skooma is the real deal, like crack (a real junky's drug).
*Crack can ONLY be smoked in a pipe, unlike other drugs that can be taken pretty much any way. there is an abundance of Skooma pipes in the game, indicating it is smoked in such a way.
*Crack is extremely addictive, debatably the most addictive drug there is, and has been labelled "the incurable addiction". Morrowind lore states that "Skooma addiction cannot be cured"
*the rare book, "Tales of a skooma addict" describes a scenario that seems very much a tongue in cheek story of crack addiction, at least it is reminiscent of alot of crack addiction stories I have heard of.
*I have wracked my brain and there are no other drugs in real life that even come close to the amount of similarities.
So in short, NO im not saying "OMG Besthesda are trying to peddle their narcotic filth values onto our honest christian gamers", Im just suggesting that, in the same way that so many games carry real life connotations, references and eastereggs etc... Moonsugar/Skooma is loosley implied to be the equivalent of Cocain/Crack here.
Anyway, I appologise for this rather bizare post... the thought just kinda dawned on me and hey, its 1:18am... Overanalyzing Morrowind is about as much fun as there is to have :erg:

I always figured that the fictional "Tales of a Skooma Addict" was inspired by the real book, "Confessions of an English Opium Eater"
In which case, perhaps an opium/heroin parallel would be closer than a cocaine/crack one?
Interesting topic :D and very nice piccie :thumb:

And you do lend to keep liquid in a bottle. Like laudanum perhaps, as de Quincey used.

Skooma... Skoomak... Skoorak... Coorack... Corack... Crack...
Moon Sugar... Moon Sugain... Coon Sugain... Conugain... Cocugaine... Cocgaine... Cocaine
It all makes perfect sense now...

Now, it's been a long time since I played Morrowind, but I could have sworn that the in-game book was called "Confessions of a Skooma Eater".

While for me too, so I checked, and you're absolutely (almost) right - it's 'Confessions of a Dunmer Skooma Eater'! I guess that clears it up!

The title of the real life Confessions is so that people didn't assume it was a Turkish opium eater. So which are the drug users in Tamriel?
