Ehm.. What happened to the tags of this post? :weird: Not to mention what happened staying on topic? :p Anyways.. So maybe he is starting the FTL drive to go home? But that would be stupid since he also sends a hail to tommy which wants to return til the ship..

Because it's only logical that the controls for the FTL drive would be on the ship piggybacking along for the ride...

Well, it is entirely possible that the UNN military required that the drive controls be slaved to the Rickenbacker's command consoles.

I doubt TriOp would have gone along with that. It was probably hard enough to get them to agree to let the Rickenbacker come with them.

Don't you think it would be rather stupid if these controls couldn't be remote controlled in the year of 2114 ? Goggles should be able på hack through it if it wasn't possible normally..

Don't forget that TriOp was a shadow of its former self by that point in time, though; they may not have been able to resist the clout of the military in operational matters relating to the voyage.
On the other hand, perhaps it was installed later in the journey, once the crews started getting all friendly via the big ol' worm in their heads (less likely, I'd say).

Logic kind of breaks down on the Rickenbacker. It uses all the same control screens as the Von Braun, the same "Xerxes" keyboards, all the bots report to Xerxes, and even security is apparently run by Xerxes. So while it's strange that the most prominent screen on the Rick's bridge is a Von Braun control panel... at least it's a consistent part of a much larger pattern of strangeness.
I've considered suggesting we change that screen on the bridge for the ADaoB/SHEMP integration, but of course the damn thing is baked into that final cutscene.
Nameless Voice on 28/4/2009 at 16:36
Well, maybe the Rickenbacker has a screen showing the Von Braun because the UNN didn't trust TriOp and had one screen constantly scanning their ship? :D
Maybe we could get Muzman to do a high-res version of that cutscene with the display changed.
If someone wants to make an alternate set of robot voices omitting all reference to Xerxes, it would be easy enough to implement them on the Rick.... uh, and invent an entirely new security AI?
ZylonBane on 28/4/2009 at 17:06
It would be pretty easy to go through the existing barks and just chop out all references to Xerxes. Not sure it would be worth the effort though... the weirdness of it didn't even occur to me until years after I'd first played SS2.
