I think trailers for video games are more and more important... It's now like the movies's trailers.
Remember the gothic trailer ?
The 2001 - Duke Nukem Trailer ?
So what do you think about the Arx one ?
IMHO it could be better...
( whose fault ??? jowood ? )

trailers are fascinating but sometimes they hide the real nature of the game behind ultra-lights and special effects.
i think that, for pc games, can be more valuable the demo version.
You can play a little piece of the game, taste the atmoshere and use the interface to see if it's "user friendly" or not........
I hate when u see a magnificent trailer, buy the game, and discover that game was a "schifezza!!!!" (trash)
In case of movies, u see a piece of a product worked to be seen.
in case of games u must play a piece of a product studied to be played.
What do you think about my thoughts about manuals?

Maybe it's because then games will be bought based on the specs specified on the box, instead of being bought on the playability of the product. ( The specs on the boxes of GTA3 and GP4 are basically lies, my system is roughly equal to the 'recommended' specs of both games, but in all truth I'd label my system a 'minimum' config in both cases :( )

IMHO it could be better... I agree. If the trailer was all I'd have to go on, I wouldn't buy it...
*
bad choice of music (the initial third of the trailer is quite good, It reminds me of the UW score, but what's up with the weird techno passed the middle of the trailer? why didn't they stick to the excellent soundloops we know from the demo and the site?)
*
unnecessary use of cheap effects (my personal pet peeve) if an effect does not enhance anything: don't use it. From what I've seen from the demo, the ingame graphics are excellent, but these blurs and fades somehow give the impression they're hiding something.
*
no hint of an engaging story. the story seems to have the depth of a tombraider game. No NPC interaction is shown whatsoever.
*
the excellent magic system is hardly shown at all!!Thank god for the demo!

I do believe that a manual is a strong incentive to buy a game. So I wouldn't recommend the publisher to release an electronic version..

I almost never ever buy a game without a demo - too many lies and lies, and reviews that praise a total crap game.
And you never know if the game is really great or boring.
Some gamedemos like OFP, Thief etc made me jump and go buy the game at the next possible time, usually the same afternoon!
But I also bought games were I negleted the demo-rule and later did throw the game into a corner...

I agree. The Arx trailer was pretty disappointing. Especially after playing the demo and seeing what the game was like. It's like it was done by a film student majoring in cliches.
They should review the Morrowind trailer if that want to see how a trailer should be done. That sold me on the game immediately. Too bad the game didn't live up to the hype.

It looked very slap-dash to me, though it still got me excited about the game. The music sounded mostly uninspired and outdated.

I'm totally agree with all of you ( and so with me ! ) :
I'm agree there's nothing better than a demo. ( it's how I discovered System Shock I, and so looking glass and so ttlg.com )
But like you, screwed, I think trailers can make people buy games ( those who don't download demos ) : perhaps because an average trailer weighs about 20-50 MB and a demo about 100-150 MB !
I wonder who has done this one... ( a trainee ? )
Arx need to be sold... Arkane deserves good sells. So a good trailer.
( yes, the morrowind's one is quite good, no great effects but a powerful music, a good rythm )
Anyway... There's some trailers I like to watch sometimes.
Arx's one should be one of them... :'(

Although it's not a memorable trailer, it's not that bad.
At least it shows quite well how the game looks (but the demo is already doing this very well).
What's wrong (imho) with the trailer is:
1 - the text is incoherent with the scenario!
You are NOT "Caught in a secret dungeon"! You are caught in a prison of the gobbler's area, which is NOT "secret".
2 - running with the fast-paced music makes the game look like a 1st-person shooter (at first glance).
But anyway, even though the trailer is a bit disappointing, it's not THAT bad (I've seen worse). And above all, it shows levels that were not in the demo and it makes me really want to explore them. :)

I think that it is one of the worst trailers that I have ever seen. It looks like some amateurs first attempt at using Premier.

and there's lot of examples like that.
