And I re read
Day of the Triffids.
Oh and
The Road as well
It's funny, I'd seen The Road mentioned for the first time a week or so ago and then see two more mentions in quick succession. Would you recommend it? If it helps, Day of the Triffids is one of my favourite ever books.

It doesn't really. They're not remotely alike. I've just been on a bit of a disaster fiction binge of late (Triffs is a classic. Matheson's I am Legend usually gets the credit for influencing the Romero zombie tradition. But Triffids is a lot closer for my money and earlier. It has all the hellish imagery of masses of shambling, groping humanity, just for starters) .
The Road's good though. It's very simple and terse and poetic, in keeping with McCarthy's ourve. It doesn't really dwell on the details like most sci-fi of that sort, inviting more alegorical readings. It's fairly uneventful but it's short and paints a few pictures you remember more afterwards than during (which I suspect is the idea).

Martin's prose is phenomenal as usual and it is truly the most original, non cliche piece of adult fantasy that I have read in a long time. The great thing about Martin is that he is not afraid to kill off main characters, so you will almost never guess the outcome of each situation and the books keep you in true suspense.
Wish he wrote for Marvel then, I catched up with Messiah Complex and Divided We Stand storylines and... uh.

If it's in print I read it. Backs of cereal boxes, novels, technical treatise, mystery, fantasy, short stories, anime (with and without the translations) etc.
