I just hit the 'View new posts' button as I've done countless times before but this time I was slapped with:

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database.

I've been getting a lot of CGI errors recently and the forums have been taking increasing times to load. Is this related to the increase of muppetry in Comm chat...?

Would that it were that easy.
The CGI errors are persistent bastards, and MsLedd has spent much effort trying to figure out why the hell they persist and then what the hell she can do about them. Far as I understand, they're a weird spectral remnant of when the forums used UBB. That kind of computerology is beyond my small brain, though. I am good at the "push a button, something happens" and that's pretty much as far as it goes.
The forums have been excruciatingly slow and twitchy lately. That's being looked into as well, though again not by me... If it's code, I'm lost. If it's something physical with the server or the pipe, I'm several hundred miles too far north of the machine. I tend to sit to one side and shout out what I think are helpful suggestions while David and MsLedd roll their eyes and make threatening gestures at me with a ball-gag.

If I remember correctly the <i>too many connections</i> error means just that - that the <i>max_connections</i> variable has been exceeded. The default is 100, so maybe we had more than that. Hrm, I don't know if we could suffer the extra connections if we upped that. I expect MsLedd or Saam will know :)

Nothing I can do from my end then? Good. If I have to open up this pc again it'll be to apply a lump hammer. Repeatedly. In where I judge it's face to be.

Ah, I was wondering about the recent slowness for the forums, too. Hope you can find and eliminate the cause :)

Why, do MsLedd and David live in the same area? I don't understand how they both have access or ability to fix it. I've always thought David was "head-honcho", but then again MsLedd's status is "TTLG Server Goddess" so... well... its confusing.

They live about as far away from being in the same area as possible. The miracle of Remote Server Administration is how they can both access and fix things, but if there's a physical problem then it's up to Saam (who exists in close physical proximity with the server) to plug it back in, replace bits, whatever.
There is no hierarchy in the TTLG Adminisphere as such. More like a collection of skillsets and domains, with whoever's good at whatever being the one who does what it is. Obviously, Saam (as owner and operator of the hardware) and Dan (as co-creator of the site network) have their own private bathrooms and can call in sick whenever they damn well please, but otherwise it's a case of "Whoever gets there first and can fix something, plz fix it, kthnx"
Which generally tends not to be me, as my skills are of the People Variety, and I also tend to function as a bit of a ThinkTank. I am afrayed of code, it is the scarey.
