Yeah, Mieville is what I'd recommend for some pulp fiction, and Perdido Street Station certainly has the horror elements you're looking for.
Plus, he has the decency to write self-contained books.

Recently read Matter, which was actually my first look at the Culture books.
I felt like there was a lot of meandering and setup that hit a sudden OH SHIT ending that rendered many of the prior developments pointless. But I enjoyed it enough to check out more Culture, probably being sensible this time and starting at the start.

It's funny you should mention Iain M. Banks, because I feel that Banks and Miéville are relatively similar in their different genres. The more I read them, the more I see the differences (in style and in how they treat their subject matter), but there is definitely a similarity.

Matter is the only one I haven't read - not only because I'm taking a break from the series, but because almost every review I've read names it as considerably more drawn-out/meandering than any of the other books.

I'm pretty sure Mieville has acknowledged Banks as a direct influence, so it's hardly surprising.

I'll let you know how I go with it.
Yeah, let me know as I gave it a look during my lunch break and the first page made me want to puke in the sink.
I hate modern fantasy more than I ever have at the moment :(

"A Platoon Leader's Tour".
Pretty much a compilation book put out by West Point's Leadership Development center. It consists of a series of events described by the Platoon leader's that experienced them, and is actually one of the first class-handout books I've enjoyed.

Just wrapped up Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon. Not a bad book.

Just to echo the suggestion here then, I've had Perdido St Station recomended a bunch of times to me as being very good.

I picked up Perdido St. Station today, which I'll read as soon as I wrap up The Great Gatsby.
