There are similarities, certainly, but Hyperlight Drifter felt more like a Soulslike to me in terms of how unforgiving it can be. You can play Hades messily, but Hyperlight Drifter requires you to be more precise. There's an almost puzzle-like element to the combat encounters in HLD, whereas you can wade in and just go wild in Hades more easily. The upgrades in Hades also give the combat a very different feel, while HLD remains minimalist and almost spartan.

Yeah, HLD's moveset is designed to be intuitive but also requires you to intimately understand things like timing, positioning, and animation length. The reason why it requires you to do this is because mistakes are often costly. Hades allows you more freedom and practically pushes you to use more dynamic skillsets thanks to your ever-evolving abilities and arsenal, but also blunts the edge just that little bit to allow you to fuck up but bring yourself back from the brink with a little luck. HLD, instead, prefers you perfect the basics and hone your edge, like an unyielding master.

Yeah I finished that twice, a lot of fun! The levels still look good with a lot of nice little touches and great attention to detail.

Very brief one, but while Star Wars Squadrons did give me some headaches out of the (virtual) box, once I got it to work in VR it was pretty amazing simply for fulfilling that childhood fantasy: of sitting in the cockpit of an X-Wing or TIE Fighter. From what I've heard and played myself, it's not quite X-Wing, TIE Fighter or X-Wing Alliance, it's somewhat simplified and clearly not as focused on single-player, but it's the closest I've played in decades, and with 2020 graphics and sound and in VR? Drool.

Agreed - having a lot of fun with Squadrons and VR really serves as an enhancement.

Continuing on with the theme of completing my "on hold" games, I finally finished Doom 2016. While I enjoyed the first half, boy did the game drag on after that. I guess that's how the other Doom games have gone as well though, so I shouldn't be surprised. All that said, quite a good game, and I particularly liked some of the boss fights. I just would have liked to see more variety of enemies.
ARMA3 is next backlog game I've started to play. Although I absolutely loved OFP and some of the expansion packs , for some reason I've never gotten around to playing any of the ARMA games.
As for new games, I've also started playing Green Hell. It's a story driven survival game (there's a standalone sandbox as well) set in the jungle. Although I'm playing it on standard difficulty, it's like The Long Dark on steroids, and barely made it through the first night...parasites, fever, venom, dirty drinking water... So far so good

Are you in it for the single-player content or are you also interested in multiplayer
Arma?

Single player first, at least until I get the hang of it. Speaking of which, I'm a little puzzled by the way that the scope works. When I've got an optical scope attached (e.g. MOS) is it meant to show a traditional scope view? When I use it, it just seems to zoom in slightly more than using it without a scope, rather than switch to a crosshair view.

Weird, I never had any technical issues with Doom Eternal (apart from the whole anti-cheat debacle.)
I thought that game was generally meant to be very stable.

It is. I haven't seen a mass of complaints on the internet about it being crash/freeze-happy other than the odd edge case, and my system hasn't had issues with it either. icemann is probably still running his CPU at >90° C temps or some other component in his hardware chain is acting up.
*or it could be a borked installation/corrupted OS/software subcomponent, of course
