I'm convinced Sluggs exists outside of time and posts to all eras of TTLG history simultaneously, where there's no difference between 10 minutes and 10 years. :laff:
That said, I don't think we've had a grand fantasy RPG since Witcher 3, have we? I liked Skyrim more, especially with the modding, but it's really showing its age now. Elder Scrolls 6 can't come fast enough.

Well, there IS Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and there was Divinity: Original Sin 2 as well, but they've not quite got the same focus or design as TW3 since they're both different takes on oldschool RPG-ing.

Also, Pillars of Eternity 2, which I enjoyed more than both Kingmaker and DOS2. Probably my favourite game since Witcher 3.
Between Kingmaker and DOS2, I think that Kingmaker was by far and away the better game, but bungled the ending by rushing it and forcing an invisible time limit on the player.
DOS2 I just couldn't stand. While it was bigger than the first game, and the personal stories of the party characters were good, I thought that they completely ruined the combat gameplay, and their gear & levelling systems were completely broken. Because gear became redundant as soon as you levelled, I felt I spent more time shopping than playing.
On top of which, the encounter design had one too many unavoidable set-pieces where ridiculously overpowered enemies got the first turn, no matter what you tried.
And having to deal with that bullshit cursed surface mechanic for the entire game was just draining.
Don't even get me started on the broken initiative and armour systems.
Gods, I really hated DOS2.
Which is a shame, because I loved the first one.
It's why I have massive concerns about Larian being at the helm of Baldur's Gate 3. I don't think they're capable of implementing a balanced and fun RPG combat system any more. And I think their wackiness may feel innapropriately out of place.

Yeah, I really should get on with Deadfire, but I also just got Wasteland 3, I don't know what's wrong with me :D.
Anyway, I think the key thing in dema's post that I ignored is comparing TW3 to Skyrim, and Skyrim just isn't in the same league at all. So dema, what you're actually talking about is the appeal of the feeling of high fantasy traipsing in lands unbounded, n'est-ce pas?

Well first of all I was talking about Skyrim's modding scene. But I never looked into the Witcher 3 modding scene that much. Actually I haven't finished the Witcher 3. Well, I haven't gotten that far into it. Okay, okay, I think I loaded it up once and looked around... Maybe I installed it. Fine, okay, FINE! It's still sitting in my Steam queue waiting to even be installed. Are you happy now?!! You figured out the truth of it?! :laff:
Ahem, in any event, I didn't really mean to make a comparison. I like Skyrim a lot, especially because of the modding scene. (It's like Thief 2 in that way. It wouldn't have been near as special without that 2nd life in the mods.) I like watching videos of The Witcher 3, but--although the world is very lovely--the style is somehow off for me compared to Skyrim, and I can't exactly explain why. It's somehow too ... colorful? And for some reason the free choice of a player in Skyrim compared to the set protagonist of The Witcher somehow makes a difference. Maybe...
One of my favorite games recently, full stop, has been Kingdom Come Deliverance, which of course isn't high fantasy, but I love that world so much. And I learned that it's modding tools are pretty good. I'm thinking about shooting a machinima in it and maybe making a few cool mods.

This is the "humor" you wanted preserved? Wow, ok.
It's the principle of the matter. Fuck censorship.
Given that Skinsuit 3D Realms is run by Danish, I don't have much hope for the remake. The viking ancestors of modern day Scandinavians would be spinning in their graves if they could see what has become of their descendants.
There is one potential glimmer of hope. IP holder Night Dive actually DEcensored SiN Gold when they patched it earlier in the year. For whatever reason a handful of textures were censored when Ritual originally ported SiN 1 to Steam in the late 00s. So there is some precedent there.

If you've put off playing Witcher 3 for all this time then you may as well wait until next year. They're rolling out a free "next gen" graphical patch in 2021.

Aw schnapp!

https://arstechnica.com/civis/images/smilies/flail.gifAnyway, TW3's environments take a wider variety of inspiration given the geography you traverse, but they're secondary to the actual game and quest portion, which is not Skyrim's (or any Bethesda RPG's) strong point. I can maybe see the perspective of the visuals being too 'amped' if you're not particularly enamoured by the art direction, even if I don't particularly agree with that beyond there being way too much wind everywhere. While playing, the game makes its environments interesting, and that's the primary criterion I'd judge the art/environmental design by.

Which is fine. Most of us don't give a shit about embarrassingly juvenile 90s nostalgia anyway.

No one gives a shit about your viewpoint on their culture, least of all the Danish.
Their viking ancestors are probably too busy drinking wine out of the skulls of their enemies in Valhalla or whatever other dumbass cliché you want to drape rape and pillage in.

When they're using the lense of their culture to censor pre-existing art then it's a fucking concern. Making their own original games where Bombshell is an androgynous blob is one thing, fucking with the classics is over the line.
Sulphur on 19/9/2020 at 11:37
Well, it's a good thing the original still exists if you can't stand the remake, then. No one's taking that from you.
