Oh, it's not the audio that's an issue here. It's the framerate that seems extremely uneven at times, at least on my PC. It's most visible when the game moves the camera to show you the next area you have to traverse, but it's also there in regular play. It hasn't yet affected how well the game plays, but it's still somewhat annoying. People seem to be blaming Unity for that, but then people who probably have little to know understanding of engines seem to blame Unity for everything. Girlfriend left you? Unity. Ate a bad burger? Unity. Didn't get that pay raise? Unity.

The first thing you have to realize about my use of that term is that I'm a junkie for artistic indie games.
A lot of us here are, though I think qolelis may be the only one that's a bigger junkie than I am, which is why I always want to hear what he's playing.
Be careful what you wish for...

I decided to replay System Shock 2 to finish off the dark engine trilogy. I'm doing the run-around in Engineering right now and...I'm actually not enjoying it as much as I remember. I know it's fantastical, but I wish the difficulty worked more like Thief or Deus Ex where the highest one meant you were more frail and resources were scarcer and maybe even (like Dishonored) the AI were more skilled, but apparently over the years (thanks, BioShock) I've grown to hate enemy hitpoint scaling in these kinds of games. Weirdly, it didn't bother me in Nightmare mode in Prey, but it annoyed the hell out of me the last time I played a bit of Dark Messiah and it's irritating me in SS2. I could restart on normal, but I think I might look into making a custom difficulty instead because I really like the scavenging aspect. Just not the cheesing around a corner while I pump 10 anti-armor rounds into a robot. Or, most likely, I'll just man up and get through it.

This reminds me of an ongoing discussion in the Terraria community. Back in 2015 the game got Expert mode, which increases the health and damage of all enemies while also adding new AI to a lot of enemies (notably every boss gets new tricks). About a month ago the devs then added Master mode, which offers an additional increase in health and damage on top of Expert mode, bit it does not change any enemy AI.
Expert mode seems to be almost universally accepted as a good mode to play for an increase in challenge while Master mode has split the community on whether it's a worthwhile addition to the game.

Pretty sure the hardest difficulty in Dark Messiah is meant to be played almost entirely with instant-kill effects.

I remember being rather annoyed playing DM on Hard by trying to balance out kicking people and hitting them. Kicking is always the answer... well, except if it's spiders, I guess.

That is one game I have to play at some point. Heavily inspired by Dawn of the Dead isn't it?
VERY heavily.
It was one of my favourite games of that generation, along with its sequel. Not something I'd feel up to replaying now though, as the game isn't the most welcoming.
It's heavily based on time limits and requires multiple play-throughs to get the most out of it. It also has a lot of proto-survival style mechanics (before those things became mega-popular).
And yet, when it clicks, there's nothing else quite like it in the zombie genre. Of all of them, I think it's the one that captures the spirit of Romero's early movies the most, and is really a loving homage.
One of the few areas where it falls down is that it explains the cause of the zombie epidemic. Zombie stories, and by extension, horror stories in general, are better when some things are left unexplained.
Edit: As an aside, if you're really keen on the genre in general, I can highly recommend (
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1903254337/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Movies. I mean, as it was published back in 2005, it's no longer the
complete history of zombie movies, but it's still very comprehensive and well written, and will introduce you to some hidden gems of the genre, such as Dellamorte Dellamore (also know as (
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/) Cemetary Man in the States).

The funny thing with DM on the hardest setting is that you still have the insta kills like on normal, but you can kick dudes down like 3 flights of stairs and they just go 'oh I'm gonna get you now."
Anyway, I dunno why I was being so grumpy about SS2. Just got to Hydroponics. This game is still completely fucking amazing. I think part of it is just finishing Thief Gold/TMA, which combined are a legitimate contender for my favorite game ever.
