I have to protest the closing of the thread also.
I honestly don't see how its closing will improve posting on this forum as a whole. If anything it may cause less posting.
I've been a frequenter of the forums here since 2001. Originally I started coming here because of System Shock 2 and making levels for it, but gradually over time I ventured out into the other areas (comm chat, deus ex and gen gaming for the most part).
For the last 2 years I'd been mostly posting in the "what are you playing" thread. Why? Cause I don't want to have to make a thread for each and every game I'm playing (which at times can be several from point to point in the year), many of which I don't consider worthy of their own threads, but it was nice to have a place to say "hey all I'm playing -insert game name here-" occasionally asking for help with tactics, strategies, how to get the game running right etc etc.
Was just good to have such a place on the internet to discuss that, as I can't think of any other such threads on any other forum I frequent.
Sure I'm just one person who posted in the thread, and sure people posting in there may have lead to less threads by new members of the forum in other parts of the forum. But all I can speak for is myself, and if it was important enough I'd make a thread for it, and if it wasn't but was something I'd like to mention and maybe have a short discussion on (if someone else had something to say about it) then I'd post in the thread.
Sure at times the thread devolved into dethtoll vs -insert person here- or koki vs -insert person here- arguments, but those got amusing after a while, as with any forum when you grow accustomed to the more long term posters.
I found the thread to also be a source of good conversation and argument on issues that may not otherwise have had the amount of people posting (due to also being frequenters of the thread) and may otherwise not have been spoken of, as they were more a result of the total games played by a particular user that resulted in the discussion/argument, where as if the thread had not existed then the discussion would never have taken place.
So all in all I have to protest the move to close the thread. I've never protested anything on this forum in all the time I've been coming here, but on this one I definitely do. I was saddened by the threads closing and already don't post as much as before. I'll always be here however. Or till the site closes down (heaven forbid).

Okay now I don't understand. If this thread serves the same purpose as the last What Are you Playing, what's changed and what was the point of shutting the original?
