You've reminded me that I need to revisit Selaco and potentially re-write my review after the dev added the "Half Like" mutator specifically addressong the pacing problems I and a lot of others highlighted.
The dev is very present in the community, and obviously cares, but has also shown a little of their inexperience, taking umbrage at very justified criticism. Thankfully, it looks like they are gradually absorbing some of this.
Criticism of the game wasn't helped by community fanboys dogpiling negative reviews. But that at least helped me realise that as the author of a review, I can delete any non-constructive comments.
Half Like Mutator Notes:
Quote:
NEW MUTATOR: Half-Like
Aims to make Selaco more seamless with fewer distractions that get between you and your goal.
Removes the 'Secrets Found' stats and no longer informs you when a secret is found.
The intermission screen is no longer shown when completing a level.
The Chapter Completion screen no longer shows the secret counter.
Entering a new level no longer prints the level number. It only prints the area you just entered.
DEV NOTE:
A common critique is how some players felt secrets ruined the pacing of the game. While we personally enjoy the number of secrets in Selaco, it's understandable how this is not something everybody likes. It is also a welcome accessibility feature for players who have difficulty moving on without a full completion first.

Devil's Hideout: In the same vein as (
https://cosmicvoid.itch.io/) Cosmic Void's previous point & clicks. Short, gorgeous, absolutely nails the vibes it's going for but with very loose narrative and weak puzzles. Still loved the magical realism and I just can't get enough of the visual style.
I played a bit of the demo, and it really does nail the 90s adventure game vibe so well it could have been released back then, and no one would have batted an eye at it. I really wasn't a fan of how under-clued it was and loosely designed, the narrative seemed a bit stock tropey, and when I got stuck trying to figure out what to do with some random inventory bits in the small handful of locations you move around in, my patience gave out.

Yeah. Suspension of disbelief only works through acceptance of the sloppy buildup of common tropes (including trying every object combination) and going with the flow; If you're not sold on the aesthetics, the full game won't redeem itself.

Just played through Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow via the Advance Collection. Everyone says this is almost as good as SOTN, and... yeah! It's almost as good as SOTN, guys! Tho the Advance Collection giving you savestates was also a big help in certain sections where my gamerskillz/gamerpatienze failed me.
Do any of the local opinion-havers have any opinions about Harmony of Despair, Vampire's Kiss or the GBA Castlevania 1 remake? Aria of Sorrow was short and sweet enough that I could go for another one of these.

I had a Castlevania on the DS that must have been Dawn of Sorrow which I remember really enjoying. Apparently it's the direct sequel to Aria.
IIRC, it had some interesting action RPG mechanics, including levelling of abilities I think?
I've probably still got it at home, although I lost the charger for my OG DS while moving at some point in the past.

I like Harmony of Dissonance a lot -- I assume that's what you mean. To me it felt the closest to actual Symphony of the Night. And it has one of the coolest soundtracks ever recorded, with (

Ah, Michiru Yamane showing she's always got it even if the palette she's working with is squeezed out theremin farts from a GBA speaker.

I've been meaning to mention Grunn, ostensibly a gardening simulator but in fact a puzzle-solving mystery wherein the puzzles are of the enjoyable "use the right item in the right place at the right time" variety as opposed to the unpleasant "turn levers over and over until you hit the correct combination" style. Graphically it's a puree of PS1 and N64, cartoonish yet sinister, horror-adjacent and darkly humourous. I reached the good ending in about five hours and then spent another five or so achievement-seeking for what is now one of my few achievement-complete games, so that should say something about how much I enjoyed it. Don't use the shears on the magpie.
