Hiding in Dishonored is mostly about going up, lol. They should've given all the enemies big ol' visors to represent how little they look above their own altitude.
I'm still learning, but, yeah, I have noticed that guards seem to listen more then they look if I'm above them (and they're not alerted).
My main habit from
Thief is trying to hide in shadows, but that doesn't seem to do much at all in
Dishonored. I'm still not sure how the guards' vision works, though, so I'm trying to test things out, pushing the, yet unknown, limits.
Another thing of note is that I, a little late, saw that I can actually disable all(?) quest markers, so I'll probably turn them off eventually. While they did make it easy to get started, they are also getting a bit annoying, like I want to find things out for myself, not getting herded around. What is the game like with quest markers disabled?

My main guideline for Dishonored for guards that are facing or turned towards me is "if I can see them they can see me" so I typically hide as much as possible and only peek as necessary. Verticality and using Blink helps you play around but it's better to be cautious.
In fairness doing this usually overestimates the guards' detection abilities, but in the Pendleton brothers mission I was once sighted from across the gardens even though I was crouched at the back end of a roof half-behind a chimney, so it can be a bit unpredictable sometimes...

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Today, I played with all HUD elements turned off—except for a simple crosshair, which I kept at 20% opacity. I'll keep playing like that for the mission I'm currently on and then evaluate. It felt more immersive and more fun to explore on my own, but I don't know yet if I might run into trouble later for disabling what could be disabled.

Just completed Burrick's Head Inn.
Gradually playing through all the FMs on my PC (I have about 200 of them) and getting rid of the trash ones - either broken and buggy or just way off the Thief ambience.

Picked up Metroid Prime Remastered last Friday but ended up spending most of the weekend with Kingdom: New Lands. It's such an infuriating god damn game and I can't stop playing it. Metroid is good.

If you get to Two Crowns, which is apparently better, let us know about that too. Metroid's not just good, it's great, I think. The game's got its quirks, but damn if it isn't atmospheric, and it still feels and plays like something new, like a vision of a different evolutionary path first person shooters could have gone down.

Yeah, Metroid is great. I don’t have quite the tolerance for endless backtracking that I did back in 2002, though, so I’m grateful for the thoughtful hint system, which only kicks in after you’ve wandered around aimlessly for a time. Or maybe that was in the original too? In any case, the beam and visor system is just as fun as it was back in the day, and I love even though the world is just a series of rooms, each one feels unique, with very little reuse of assets and lots of custom little details. It does remind me of Super Metroid in that sense. The only downside, and I remember having this criticism as a kid, is that the bosses don’t have the same sense of grotesque horror as Super Metroid. You get plant monster, rock monster, but where’s the dinosaur whose skin you have to melt off in the lava? Or the floating eyeball ghost with the slowed down elephant sound effects? Those bosses were so creepy and memorable.

Ehhh, I'm not as big a fan of it as you are, Sulph. I wouldn't call it atmospheric. Yeah, it looks great, but it's also all so videogamey that none of it feels like real places. And yeah, all that dang backtracking. Starring at the 3D map (which annoyingly has inverted movement/look controls compared to the rest of the game! WHY? Trips me up every time I open it) and wondering "hmm, was I supposed to get into that tiny crevice somehow?" Then backtracking across areas you've already gone through twice only to discover, nope, need another upgrade for that. Really wish this game had fast travel. On the other hand, it all feels very slick and fun to play. It's good.

I think that's fine! I give it a pass for some of the less pleasant parts because it's a genuine adaptation of Super Metroid's mechanics in 3D, and it's such a seamless job but with its own new twists. I think a lot of the atmosphere is gained from scanning the environments, and getting drip-fed information about where you are and what's happening/happened is part of the allure, but it can read as just a set of boxy spaces in the long view if you're not willing to buy into that.
The gameplay can be painful in that remembering what goes where is only helped so much by the map, so yeah, that part isn't so much fun.
