Another video devlog for Rocket Blocks.
I don't think I can wait for Unity 4.6 to start building the main menu, so I think getting one in is going to be my goal for the next week or so.

I'm thinking about making a phone app for reporting human rights abuses in Burma. Not so much like a game, I know. But I could use some help getting started (on the technical side; I got the content covered). I've never made a phone app before and could use some basic ideas. Anyway, I opened a (

This is not the game I showed off in the video a few posts up. That was Driftgame, which has hence spun off into 3 separate games called Driftschool, A Journey Through The Magical Forrest Of Drift, and Driftfrire. All of which are so ridiculously ambitious I have no hope of finishing them. So, this past week I went back and tinkered on another game I'd started work on before all that, a game called Adrift (I know, I kick ass at coming up with names). I'd previously given up on Adrift when I couldn't get the controls right, but this time, within minutes of starting work on it I cracked the code! Managed to get the steering/floating mechanic somewhat close to how I had imagined it. After that I was unstoppable. I was ON FIRE, people. I spent most of my free hours for the rest of the week coming up with new ideas and implementing them without a hitch, completely revamping the GUI, adding soundeffects, working on the looks, cleaning up the code, and finetuning the whole thing. This morning I got around to actually making a few levels for it as well, and I think it's ready to be shown off to the world. Or at least this thread. So here it is:

Alright henkster, I played your game for a bit! Here are some of my thoughts about it... some of my ideas may suck in your opinion and are probably totally against your gameplay philosophy or whatever, but please don't mind me, I'm just throwing out some random ideas here. :)
I'm not gonna lie and claim that this is going to be my GOTY 2014 or anything, but after spending a few frustrating moments getting used to the controls and finding out how things work, it actually turned out to be a pretty fun game! Extremely frustrating at times, yes, but still fun.
The visuals are simple but nice enough and a game like this doesn't necessarily need anything better, but I think it would be nice if the ship looked a little more like a futuristic spaceship instead of something that a 2-year-old child had built out of Legos. It's also sometimes a bit difficult to tell the shapes of the red blocks and where I'm supposed to go, but perhaps that's an intentional design thing. The huge gray flat areas are also a bit tedious and look boring - a few small blocks and obstacles here and there would spice things up nicely I think, and it'd keep the player on their toes all the time.
The controls felt a little awkward at first, but once I got the hang of them, flying around started to feel quite fun. The controls may be a bit too unforgiving at times - it just takes a tiny little slip and your ship starts drifting left instead of right, and you know that you're doomed... but I guess that's part of the charm. The blue indicator (how many boxes you have collected) seems a bit useless to me, a "fuel" indicator (how much time you can spend floating in space before you blow up) would be more helpful in my opinion. The sound effects were fine, but why does the cool music only start playing once you've got one box left to collect? I had to circle around the last box just to listen to the music for a while, and there went my awesome record time! :p
I played through three levels (or perhaps four?) and got the "Click to go to the next level" message at the end of it, but despite of clicking my mouse button furiously nothing happened anymore. Is that a bug or are there simply no more levels at the moment?
I'm well aware that this game is still in early stages, but I think there's definitely some potential in here. This reminds me of good old Skyroads a bit, which is of course a pretty cool thing! With some fun and fast-paced levels, some cool power-ups and stuff, and somewhat nicer (and a bit less repetitive) visuals this could turn out to be a great little game. I'm looking forward to the next version. Thanks!

Nice one, henke. :D There's always room for abstract racing games. Are you thinking of making more? Also, I noticed that you don't have (
http://store.steampowered.com/app/253030/) Race The Sun on Steam. Not much drifting, but it might be useful inspiration.

There's only 3 levels. Kudos on getting to the end. I first showed this game to Sulphur and Jeshibu and was a bit dismayed to hear that neither of them could make it past the first level. Gonna have to work on making it a bit more accessible at the start. Everything is a bit ill explained at the moment beacuse I want to see how pick-up-and-play friendly it is, and if people will
get it.
Definitely will implement some sort of float timer on the ship (in addition to the static sound) which'll let you know when how close you are to blowing up. Maybe have the ship start flashing red or something like that.
Sulphur pointed out the similarity to Skyroads too. Hadn't noticed it myself but I guess it does look a bit like it. :)
