I keep a progress diary and a summary of what I'm doing so I can pick something small to work on on days when I don't feel like it. It's working very well, but it is depressing noticing how quickly the days go by.

My problem is one of procrastination. When I'm working on something, I go full steam ahead. It's those moments in between that kill me, since I always think of a billion and one reasons to put off picking it back up.
I have exactly this problem as well.
Once I'm working on something, I get stubborn and will keep fiddling with it until I get it working how I want, but I often find it very hard to start.
I'll think I should do on my project, then decide to play a game for a bit, afterwards thinking now I should work on the project, maybe open the editor, but then go and read TTLG, play another game, etc., and never actually end up truly starting.
I'd suspect that a good way to build motivation is to show off or discuss what you're working on more often - because other people talking about what you're working on can inspire you to improve it or expand on it

You're trying to trick me into making the proper model for it now, aren't you? ;) ok

Pyrian, how's Glade Raid coming along?
NV, nice door physics. Very Thiefy! :thumb:
On the topic of maintaining a healthy work ethic, yeah, I struggle with that too. That's the hardest part of game dev. What I try to do is work at least 30 min per evening on my current project. I usually end up getting really into it and spending 1-2 hours on it, but sometimes it's a drag even sticking with it for a half hour.
This week in POGOPPL-development I implemented a screen fade when changing scenes and a "level skip system" that lets you just move on if you've failed a level 10 times in row. That's right, I'm dumbing the game down for THE CASUALS. (you know who you are, my loyal testers. ;))

4 Keep your issues bite sized.
This is probably my biggest issue, I tend to focus on the big picture first and don't map my way down to the simple stuff.

http://i.imgur.com/z8VWUYk.pngSeriously, though... It was about a year ago, I was gamely water-painting tents for enemy encampment missions, when I belatedly discovered that my daughter Amethyst was
not going to be getting into preschool at one year old after all and I was stuck with her for the year. With savings running low, I put aside Glade Raid for the time being and launched into Orbiceptor. I got the Orbiceptor prototype done in a couple months (basically working late nights and occasional weekends 'cause I had the kid), but hit a wall, both motivationally and monetarily and took up contractor work to make ends meet. (While still watching a toddler full time, and my 5 year-old to boot, but at least she's in Elementary school.)
That era is fast approaching its natural end, as my younger daughter will soon be 2 years old and we've already lined up daycare. The 6-year-old will go into an after-school program and I'll finally be free to work full time again - but again, no real savings to work on games, so I'll need to pick up more contracts and/or a "normal" job. (There are more complications with the contracting situation but they're not important to Glade Raid or Orbiceptor.)
I'd really prefer to launch Orbiceptor and put it on my resume, but I can hardly get my contracting work done, and when I have anything resembling free time I just want to sleep. ...Or forum. I can't even be arsed to
play games. I've got the NoviNews beta sitting in my Steam queue as I type this.
P.S.: Speaking of which, (
