I thought the issue with Blender was never that it wasn't powerful, but rather that only the open-source zealots could bring themselves to fight with one of the worst user interfaces since vi.

It wasn't that long ago that it couldn't do ngons, and didn't even have a knife tool.
The UI is still confusing as hell, though. It's a sight better than it was before 2.5, but it's still overcrowded and hard to follow. Hopefully the big 2.8 update will streamline some of it.

I really hope Blender will get love it deserves, but truth is, it's not used much yet, at least in pro and semi-pro environments. AFAIK, in movies (animation, fx) and games everyone uses Maya, Max or other software (Houdini, Mari, etc.). Also, as much as I like the overall enthusiasm of that young Blender guru guy, I can't stand his tutorials. He's also official face of Substance, and stuff he makes for Designer and Painter are way too blah and chaotic. I wish they had someone more calm, and with more systematic approach.

Blender will always be the tool of choice for the indie scene and hobbyist, but will probably never quite make it to the big scene. It's demographic has grown a bit over the last few years, especially once Epic started throwing money their way. But the fact all the other modelers are so well entrenched by this point, and the GPL license limiting 3rd party from supporting it with their own software (it's the sole reason why Allegorithmic hasn't developed a Designer plugin for it like they have the other big editors) will always keep it just on the cusp of true popularity.

IMO they still have a chance, because Autodesk would rather sit on their asses and charge like 250 EUR per month for max or maya. We'll see :) But yeah, as of now noone in the pro field would incorporate Blender into their pipeline.

Though all things considered, it's UI is still better than Max's.
...yeah, I went there. :P

I did some scripting in 3DS Max. *shudder*
Renzatic on 20/5/2018 at 02:28
I used Max for 45 minutes once.
It was...it was...just...

I used 3D Studio back when it was 3D Studio 4 for DOS, then became Max, and poked around its IK solver, and generally had a great time animating stuff on a whim over the years, so maybe that makes me biased (also I can't draw for shit)... but its UI isn't as obtuse as AutoCAD's, people. There's something special if you're looking for that.

AutoCAD was first released in 1982. Before the Apple ][e, which was notable at the time for adding lower-case letters... Pardon me, I'm about to suffer a nostalgia bomb.
