What's your background again, Renz? Do you know any other programming languages?
Renzatic on 6/8/2016 at 18:35
Yak, C++ is probably a little hardcore considering my needs, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a glance. Got it bookmarked for Kindle.
Pyrian, I'm about a half step up from being as stark a noob as you can get. I've dabbled enough in HTML, JavaScript, and C# to know what to expect, but I don't really know how to do anything. I want something that'll start with the bare basics, then move on from there.

I'd say that while C++ offers a lot of stuff that you won't ever have to think about when using C#, the fundamentals of programming with either language are almost the exact same. C# doesn't have pointers, but the Garbage Collector helps keep your memory clean of lost references (something C++ lacks).
If you can't find a good C++ or C# tutorial for your purposes, try looking at Java tutorials as well. Java and C# share a lot of things, almost to the point where C# can be considered the bastard child of C++ & Java. There are of course specifics for that you have to do differently in either language, but the basics are very similar and you should be able to apply the same teachings to either language.

For reference, I've already worked about halfway through (
https://channel9.msdn.com/Series/C-Fundamentals-for-Absolute-Beginners) this. It was good for showing me the, like it says, fundamentals, but I want something that gives me tasks after the lessons, so I can get more indepth, beyond goofing around with what I've been shown.
I'll probably try out Java to get my learn on. Unlike C#, which looks to be primarily MS-centric, it seems there are tutorials all over the damn place for it.

Oh I wasn't recommending C++, C# will be an easier entry way to coding for sure. I just meant I used that book and they do series for every language I think so worth looking it up
WingedKagouti on 6/8/2016 at 22:45
Seems like each chapter has a workshop section with various tasks, should fit your purpose quite nicely.

Yup. It's looking that way. I'm going to finish up the MS provided tutorials first, since they seem to be doing a good job of working as a primer, then I'll see if I can sharpen up my skills with the book Yak recommended.
Thanks Koob! :D

This week I've been making a card game, possibly collectable, called "Plot Twist." The idea is two players are like competing directors in a movie. One is trying to make the protagonist reach their goal (the hero gets the girl, or finds the murderer, or saves the city, etc. At the start there's like a Bridge bidding phase where players set a goal, then can increase it, and when one passes the other one has to meet it.) Then the job of the other player is to throw up every obstacle they can to keep the protag from meeting the goal (the love interest meets another guy, the witness to the murder gets axed, etc.) and make it a tragedy. And certain events allow plot twists where the murderer is really your mom, etc.
It's a bit more convoluted than that because each goal is really a set of subgoals or prerequisites you have to do to allow the later actions, and it's meeting those that you're fighting over. The cards are all sorts of funny genre tropes that can work or backfire (eg if you make the love interest sick to crush the protag, then you risk the protag takes care of her & she falls in love and gets better). The cards follow rules to get closer to or block meeting subgoals, so it's not just open roleplay, it's still a game, but a story comes along with them.
Right now the big test is how big the set of 'directions' cards can be and if they can always sensibly be used in different mixes to make it a viable game. If it works so the set can be extended indefinitely, then that's how it can be made a CCG and have expansion packs. Re: genres, I think it'd be funny if the players were also fighting over which genre the movie even is, like romance or horror.
