I played on one of those free trial weekends about half a year ago, but not for very long, because there just wasn't anything there that grabbed me. I loved the Ultima series from the fourth to the seventh instalment, but there wasn't anything about this that felt very Ultima. Okay, there were nods to the series, but thy were shallow and never gave the impression that the people making this even know what made the series great at one time. It also seemed amateurish and very badly designed.

Yeah, I just had a look at some gameplay on Youtube from this year, and it looks like hammered shit. Even the original Guild Wars looks better, and that was released in 2005.
I was having a look through the site earlier, and probably stoking my own anger, but looking in the store saw this gem:
"Purchase of New Player Owned Towns Expired July 27, 2016".
So players can potentially own towns, but only if they forked out real cash, and before that date which is almost two years before release of the actual game?
What the actual fuck?

I was on board right up until the moment they said it's going to be some kind of an MMO and single player hybrid. Cancelled my pledge and haven't looked back since.

Thing is, while what I wanted was mainly a modern version of a single-player Ultima, I was willing to wait and see what they do instead and to what extent that new things contains the DNA of its predecessors. What we're getting instead seems to be doing something very different, but it seems to be doing it badly as well.

SWERY (Deadly Premonition, D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die) has relaunched his project The Good Life on Kickstarter: (
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/476090608/the-good-life?ref=hero_thanks)
It's pitched as a murder mystery / debt repayment RPG, kind of like a mix between Twin Peaks and Animal Crossing and, knowing SWERY, it's bound to go off the rails at some point. As he said on the previous campaign: "This is a Swery Game, so expect a healthy dosage of horror, mystery, humor and taboo topics that helped make Deadly Premonition such a cult hit."
They've gotten a publisher and partners to contribute to the development budget, so the goal is lower this time around. Looking good so far.

I'm backing (
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kingartgames/iron-harvest) Iron Harvest, an RTS based on Jakub Różalski's paintings of an alternate-history dieselpunky sort of post-WW1. The developers don't seem to have shipped any AAA-level titles in the past, but they have done three successful Kickstarters for smaller games, and seem open about where the money is going and how they're intending to get the game fully funded. It's really gorgeous art they're working from, and it looks to be translating pretty well to game graphics.
They say they'll have a representative at PAX East this weekend with an early build of the game available for demo, so since I'll be there I plan to see if I can try it out.

That's really good news for Myst fans, because Myst 3 and 4 so far have not been available via digital download (GOG, Steam, or anywhere else for that matter).

I backed The Good Life this second time around, even though I didn't even really know what the core gameplay would be like. Well, this first proper look at the gameplay does not disappoint. It's basically a photography-based puzzle game.

The KS is getting close to halfway there, with 18 days to go: (

I hope they make it.

Yeah, I'm backing this too. It looks better than expected, but really, all it needs to be is as weird as only Swery can make it. And yes, weirder than turning into a cat to solve a murder mystery.
