2Dark is a new survival horror game from Frederick Raynal who created the original Alone in the Dark. The game consists of taking on the role of a profiler who attempts to rescue children from various serial killers. The concept sounds fairly interesting although the execution may very well be different. Considering the pedigree of those working on the game I figured that I would throw some money its way. Anyways, if this sounds like something that you may be interested in then you can check out the games Ulule page.

Huh, looks like Dead State crept out yesterday with little fanfare.
I'll have to give that a good go once I'm done with Inquisition.

I've been wanting a remake of SimAnt for years now, and that looks like it may fit the bill. Shame I don't have any disposable income to back it.

The one and only game I have ever kicked just came out (Dead State), and it is an unfortunate testament as to why I will never kick again.

Really? I have that one too but haven't played it yet as I'm waiting for the first couple of patches to go in.

Yeah. I don't really remember what it was about Dead State that inspired me into investing directly in its development, but the "final" product utterly fails to deliver anything I'd want in a game like this. I was probably drawn to the whole concept of fortifying and expanding a base in a zombie apocalypse setting while also dealing with the social politics of fellow survivors, but this plays a pretty small (and poorly developed) role in the final product. Dead State instead is mostly focused on the scavenging missions, which grow old after a few hours due to the lack of options during combat.
The game also moves at a glacial pace--I'm probably almost ten hours in, and I have yet to see any of the scouting characters level up, for example. This could just be a bug, of course, because Dead State's current condition is held together by scotch tape and promises.
It's also quite ugly to look at, with a surprising lack of creativity or style in any of its presentation. I've seen the graphics called "functional," but I wouldn't even grant them that, as they lack critical detail--often, the only noticeably difference between a zombie and a human is the hover text.
So here it is, a game I effectively paid for two years ago despite it being a heap of mediocrity that I would never have actually purchased had I waited until the release reviews were live. I guess I helped a couple developers make their dream game, but so what? I want the little guys of the industry to succeed, but I also don't want to pay for games that I won't play. Kickstarter operates on hooking you into investing in the game you want it to be, but how often do games actually manage to wind up being that game (or even better)?
And so I'm done Kickstarting anything as wildly unpredictable as a computer game. While I appreciate that many might love the whole concept of investing in another's dreams, I'm just going to stick to purchasing and playing games that are actually finished and worth playing.
