Holy crap, Cyan is actually working on a new game - (
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cyaninc/obduction) Obduction. It's about freaking time. I couldn't back it fast enough.
But isn't a little weird that they need to be funded? Guess they pretty much figured hitting their goal would be an automatic, so why not.

Not weird at all. They seem to have been keeping the doors open from solely doing ports of Myst/etc Myst spin-offs/sequels to mobile and the like, releasing their back catalogue on digital distribution services. Those sort of things tend to be relatively cheap to do in terms of money and manpower, perfect for a small scale indie.

Considering the success of Myst and Riven, and what I perceive to be a successful company, why do you feel that you need to raise funds on Kickstarter? Why are there not residual profits to invest in this project?
There aren't really any residuals on the older games. We've been staying alive as an independent studio by converting some of the older game to mobile platforms like iPhone and iPad. Profits that we made back in the day on Myst and Riven were used for Myst Online development, and other business related stuff (not sports cars, mansions, yachts, etc.) :)
So, with all that said. The money that we're making from the mobile market is helping us do the initial design of Obduction. But beyond that we don't have the funds to produce a large game like Obduction without the Kickstarter funding.

I'm backing (
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1470493497/next-car-game-a-motorsport-with-attitude) Next Car Game: A Motorsport With Attitude. Bugbear's new game promising to deliver the NEXT GENERATION in AWESOME CAR PHYSICS and TERRIBLE TITLES! :thumb:
Tried the demo of this. Good looks and atmosphere. It certainly had me interested right from the start. The engine is pretty terrible tho. Horrible pathfinding, and there are issues like the player freezing in place every time a door opening/closing animation plays. I guess that's mainly where the KS money will be going. I'm... not gonna pledge, but I hope it makes it.

Maybe this needs its own thread, but check out how cool this latest Limit Theory Dev Diary is: (

Obsession can lead to some very cool things. The guy has an amazing eye for design.

That was neat. Possibly a shame that all his videos henceforth are going to use that bloom filter... you lose so much detail with it on. My instinct says that things *should* generally be in sharp focus in space, so it immediately looked better to me when he turned it off. Of course he's the one who's looking at it all day, so maybe I'll change my mind once I get to find out for myself.

Based on the depth of his obsession, I'd say it's possible he's just spent so long looking at it, that the change is like balm for his eyes.

It looks nice, but bloom's realistic in space only if you're skirting a nebula or something.
