It's weird how long VR seems to be clinging on this time around. The last 5 times it was a fad it seemed like it went away within a year or so.
VR seems to sink its hooks into particular people. For me, it's made gaming feel new and joyous again, and as much as the press has talked about VR (and PSVR2 in particular) being dead in the water, I've had so much more fun with it over the past couple years than I have with any flatscreen games. I don't think it'll ever replace flatscreen gaming, even for me, but I wouldn't be without a headset anymore.

I kinda want one for simracing, because I don't think there's a multi-screen or ultra widescreen setup that gives you enough visual information to make up for the lack of physical feeling you get sitting at a desk or in a sim cockpit, but it just hasn't been worth it for me, especially as I'm older and haven't been into it competitively for a long time. If, say, Arkane were out there with free reign and 2 studios cranking out first person games with no corporate meddling or creative compromises I think I'd be leaning more into it though. I don't think it would be useful for the other games I play, which are mostly shmups and arcade-style action games. It does still seem a little fad-y to me though, especially when I look at how basic VR-oriented games seem to be. I guess if the VR present were more like the VR future that LGS were talking about in the 90's I'd be more hyped by it.

Games where your body isn't moving and part of the game is looking around (so in the seat of a car or motorcycle or plane or manned robot, etc.) is the textbook use for VR, so that's the kind of game to get it for if anything.

I mean, playing something that you wouldn't normally play (or be able to play) is kind of the point of VR. And while Arkane sadly isn't making VR games, your point about a lack of corporate meddling is one of the most refreshing things about the current VR landscape. It's too niche to attract a lot of big money, so you mainly get weird indie stuff, and while there's a lot of janky garbage, there are way more than enough gems to make it worthwhile. I've had a headset for almost two years now, and there has literally never been a time since that I haven't had multiple games I was interested in playing. I think I accused it of being a fad at one point, but I don't feel like that now.
As for sim racing, I've only played GT7, but the most striking thing by far is the sense of scale. People maybe don't realize that in VR everything looks life-size, and it still feels incredible. It's also interesting how cockpit mode is kind of unplayable in flat screen but in VR feels like more than enough visual information.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. I got this in some Steam sale years ago and only ever played the tutorial. Now I am 2 hours in and it's really quite good, some of the best 1st person combat I have encountered, meaty and intense. Keep having to replay some parts as I forget about the environmental stuff to take out enemies. The visuals still look pretty decent, gives me a kinda Dark Souls vibe.

Played through most of South Of Midnight today.
3rd person action adventure with magical abilities. Feels a lot like Kena: Bridge of Sprirts. Better story tho. Also your magical abilites feel very Jedi-inspired. The real star of the show is the Americana-musical-soundtrack which often narrates - in song form! - the events playing out. This might be the video game soundtrack of 2025. Will write more once I've finished it.

I also played and finished Atomfall. Not a bad game! Apart from the cool 60's England setting that I found quite unique and fresh, I thought that the game was pretty average in everything else, but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Okay, maybe there was a bit too much mandatory backtracking and the enemy AI was frustrating at times. Also, I think that some lite stealth action would have fit perfectly in this game. Killing everyone felt kinda wrong and running past the enemies was just silly.
But yeah, Atomfall is a pretty decent Stalker-like game with a good story and a nice mystery to solve. Maybe I wouldn't recommend buying it at full price, but it's definitely worth checking out if you get a chance.

You can do stealth, but yeah it's quite underpowered. More useful for scoping out the enemies and getting into a good shooting position than for doing silent takedowns. And yes I also started wishing for a fast travel option towards the end.

I was only playing on the normal difficulty, but the enemies could still spot me from a long distance even though I thought that I was pretty well hidden. To make things even worse, the bow in Atomfall has got to be the least satisfying bow in a video game ever. :D Luckily the firearms were much more fun to play with, the throwables were excellent, and my trusty cricket bat gave me such Shaun of the Dead vibes that I absolutely loved it!
I started playing I Am Your Beast during the weekend. It's pretty much Hotline Miami 3D: Forest Edition. The game's really smooth and very fast, but the extra dimension makes this feel a bit too chaotic compared to Hotline Miami for example. The missions take anything between 10 seconds and a minute to finish, but of course it often takes multiple attempts before you figure out the most optimal route and the most effective ways to get rid of the enemies. And if you care about scoring points and stuff, it will take many more attempts. I Am Your Beast is fun enough to play for fifteen minutes here and there.

I've been playing
Atomfall as well (7hrs in so about halfway) and the AI thing is really frustrating me. The enemies are simultaneously too good and too stupid and it's amazing they managed to somehow pull it off lol.
Their eysight is impeccable, they'll see my pinky finger sticking out from 30 meters away and alert the whole crew. In one or two occasions, they also seemingly saw me through a door somehow. Yet, at the same time, after they detect me, thy don't... always know how to get to me. It's a bit comical watching 3 dudes with melee weapons huddling in front of a tiny creek, an impermeable barrier, as I headshot them one by one from the other side.
Other than that, the vibe and exploration has been pretty fun, and the mystery is a bit intriguing. I'm at the point where
I just made it inside the first interchange and I've hit a bit of a wall since, if I read correctly, I need to
enter the interchange from all the doors and solve some puzzles in each section to progress next and it just feels like a lot of backtracking and busywork. I also noticed I couldn't go down because I would get an
infection, but I don't have anything to build infection resistance (only poison), so I guess I need to go hunting for some new recipe?
I also need to inflitrate the
druid fortress but with how shoddy the AI is I don't think I can stealth my way in and will probably need to take them all one by one. Might need to cheese the the AI a bit... tho I think they don't actually respawn, so at least I can do it in batches?
