I've played Daggerfall and Morrowind, and in both there has been very little relating to The Elder Scrolls. Apparently the Psijics or some other group protects them, but what they are, and their relation to anything isn't expressed.
What are The Elder Scrolls supposed to be and why are they so seemingly important, that they appear in the title of of Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind when they have nothing to do with the game?

It's just the name of the series... Bethseda doesn't necessarily have to make it something related to the gameplay... though it does present the notion of an rpg sort of game for those who haven't heard of it before.

There are references to The Elder Scrolls in various 'books' in the game. Also that they are being protected by the Psijics I think. There are references to The Elder Scrolls, but they appear to have nothing to do with any of the plots. I haven't played Arena, the first in the series, and I would assume that they played some part of Arena. What do The Elder Scrolls have to do with anything?

Not a clue. Never seen anything related to TES. But never read too many books either.
