FL Studio's actually pretty good, once you overcome the learning curve. I think it's viewed as something of an amateur's tool, but it's certainly powerful enough to create professional-sounding recordings, and the latest versions have vastly improved wave-editing capabilities.

Fruityloops is sweet, especially for the drumsynth and rhythm tracking, although for the $300 you have to pony up for a full license you could buy a used ESX-1 and just use Audacity for editing/sequencing/multitracking/VST.
