What about the atmosphere? Did they get the "Thief" ambience right ? - by Poetic thief

You bet. I like it for a movie... but not for a Thief video game. And yeah, final judgment will need to come when the game is actually seen in full force. Maybe there are enough Brosius-like ambients through the game to balance this out. I'm just sad at the implications of this; a painful reminder that the classic briefing and cutscene styles are likely long gone.
I'm not sure if there are a ton of epic horn swells in this soundtrack (I wasn't keeping a tally), but after listening to all the tracks, I felt that there were probably a lot. Like I didn't want to hear another one for a while... :)

I am nearly certain that although there will be more extended ambient examples, none will come even close to the depth and intimacy provided by Brosius.

Heh. Brosius' music was a bunch of low-fi tones that mostly avoided melody (for good reason) and could get quite crunchy. It worked because it was subtle and covered for largely absent ambient sound effects. Any depth and intimacy is entirely an accident.

Thank you for letting everyone know of your musical incompetence. I look forward to hearing more of what comes out of your hole...:laff:

You're quite wrong. There are a lot of ambient sounds in Thief, not least that awesome subtle low rumbling you get as soon as you enter a level. There are loads of incidental sounds that are like something is almost imperceptibly alive about the place.
The lo-fi crunchiness and mild industrial tone to the tracks was exactly what made them so fitting.

Eric Brosius was with LGS way before Dark Project and is one of the main reasons Thief is so enduring. His sfx and "3d" sound design were integral to the experience. His work on Dark Project, much like the rest of the project, was absolutely groundbreaking. The only game that had anywhere near that amount of sound files was Might and Magic VI: The Mandate Of Heaven, released a half year before Dark Project. And before that... there was very little non-midi effects and spoken dialogue in games, due to obvious reasons. Obvious to educated gamers of course.

Why don't you just ignore these people, then? Saves you the trouble of repeating the same boring thing every time.

It is unreasonable to expect people not to be able to respond to your comments on a public board...If you so choose, you have the option to ignore certain people...and your "unnecessary flaming" comment is ironic in the extreme.

I of course, agree...The sound design was masterfully done, and groundbreaking as well...His sense of subtle melody and timing was woven into a sonic tapestry, that produced a deeply wondrous atmosphere. Many do not realize the enormity of impact sound has on the subconscious mind, and the overall experience.

Nothing I have said in this subforum has been unnecessary flaming. However, your response to my comment about the music (which, by the way, does not indicate that I
dislike the music, but don't let subtlety get in the way of jumping to conclusions) was absolutely unnecessary.
And anyway the "don't interact with me" thing is strictly for Goldmoon because trying to hold a conversation with him and his U NOT TR00 FAN schtick is pointless. I feel like trying with you is just as much of a waste of time but at least I can
pretend I'm getting my points across.

I am going to keep doing it until Goldmoon learns to stop trying to pull me into his self-superiority vortex. For a person who claims to be a grown adult with children he sure seems to put a lot of stock in being a "truer" Thief fan than everyone else, and I'm just not going to feed his ego.
