I don't feel like posting up a large thread at the moment, but I've just completed Deus Ex and have to say that it quite possibly the greatest game that I have ever played. Although I have long proclaimed the Underworld games to be the best games ever made, I feel that Dues Ex is at least on par with those games.
For years, I have been dissapointed that game developers have almost always created RPGs for that cliche tolkeinesque genre. In my opinion, that genre has really been done to death (although I am really looking forward to Arx and Morrowind). Sci-Fi rpgs, on the other hand, are a greatly unexplored genre in gaming, so its encouraging to see Ion Storm brave this new frontier. In short, Deus Ex is the game that I've always dreamt of playing.

Which ending did you go with?

And, inevitably: Have you played System Shocks? ;)
(admittedly very different in terms of story, but...)

Fred Chook, I went with the Helios plot, although I would have prefered to go with the Illuminati. The only reason that I tried the Helios way was because I happened to stumble upon its objective right away. Although I liked Tracer Tong a lot more than the Illuminati and Helios, I wasn't really behind the idea of the world reverting back to a dark age (it seemed that the world was kind of going there anyway). As far as the Illuminati were concerned, well I guess its a case of "better the devil you know".
I kept a save game at the entrance to the Aquinas Hub, so that I could go back and play the remaining 2 endings. I will be really interested to see how they are going to deal with this in the sequel.

Talgor, I bought SS2 about 2 years ago, or there abouts. I am a big fan of the original, which I used to play on a friends computer when it first came out. I liked the sequel to a point, but it never really made a big impression on me. Although I was really impressed with a lot of the games features, including its suburb attention to detail, the game as a whole dissapointed me. With Deus Ex, I was dissapointed that the game had to end (I could have guessed that it would), whereas with SS2, I got tired of it after a while as it seemed to involve repititous objectives with very little variety. Deus Ex, on the other hand, was exciting and full of variety from start to finish.

Erm, not really. The point was the world was becoming ever more under the control of a single group of people in a single installation. Tong was obviously proposing the direct opposite. You could say neither is particularly desirable, but it's a different kind of "dark" in each case.

I gathered that much, Chimpy Chompy. I used the word dark rather liberally I guess.

While by no means a short game (pretty lengthy in fact), Deus Ex left me wanting more. I guess that's why I've played it 7 times. And each time I see stuff I've never seen before. Truely a great game. The only game I can think of that's better is Deus Ex 2.

I've got that same feeling, Phydeaux. At least with Thief there are plenty of FMs to play once you've completed the games. If you look at a post that I made regarding Deus Ex Mods/FMs, then it becomes sadly apparrent that there isn't much going on in this area. All I've got now is a void where Deus Ex used to be. Ah well, I guess that I'll just have to play through it again.

twisty - I know that I feel the same about this game as you do. I have played it over and over--I'm on my 6th time through. I keep trying to get every possible point and find every hidden item, as well as trying different combinations of the augmentations. And, of course, new and different ways and places to take down the Evil MJ12 Commandos and MIB's.
This time, I think I'll go with the 'Illuminati' ending.

I reckon people act like they've got the wrong idea about the New Dark Age ending. Communications are out. It's not like it'll be "Oh, look! My house is turning to stone! My Volvo is becoming a pony! My clothes are turning to chainmail!".
