I hope so, it was hard work to get this far.

I actually find Pitchfork to be a pretty valuable new music resource, but only when they like something.
Kind of like Vivian.

This is really the first year I've made any attempt to keep up with current music, and without Pitchfork I wouldn't have known where to start. Apart from their occasionally ridiculous writing I've found them to be quite useful.

They're elitist and biased wankers who deem anything that's out of their area shit, but I do agree that when they're talking about the area they handle, they handle it well.
Quite alot of those bands/artists are unfamiliar to me, since well, I am situated half across the world and have limited scope to get more obscure artists Pitchfork seem to present, but it's all more fun cause of that. Just hope there'd be as such an active and functional site based closer to Finland...

A useful tool, particularly if you want to keep up to date on tours/new albums/whatevs, but always take pitchfork reviews with a grain of salt. (
www.dustedmagazine.com) is another really good website for reviews, although they tend to examine music that's a shade or two more avant (i.e. cover art of ripples flowing through enigmatic ponds) but they're solid reviews
Also, am I the only one who isn't feelin'
Person Pitch. To date I've loved Animal Collective like a childhood friend, but, not this one..

4. Skinny Puppy - MythmakerSweet merciful crap! I wasn't even aware they made an album this year! I really need to do some research into this... thanks for the heads-up.

1. LCD Soundsytem - Sound of Silver: Yes, this is the best album of the year. I haven't been enjoying it as much recently because of some bad associations, but if I think back to listening to it on the boat during a moonless night it all comes back to me. James Murphy makes me want to dance, cry, live. I love it.
2. Radiohead - In Rainbows: Radiohead's most subtle and peaceful album to date. The band finally sounds truly happy on this album. The only complaint I can level at it is that it doesn't quite have the cohesiveness of an album. In Rainbows borders on just being a bunch of good songs.
3. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga: There were moments where I considered this album better than In Rainbows. Spoon's number 3 slot is more due to the sound of the album than the quality of the songs. Everything (including Daniel's voice) seems to have an edge to it, but remains pleasant to listen to. Plus, it is unbelievably fun to strum out The Underdog on an acoustic.
4. The Field - From Here We Go Sublime: Sublime...sublime. Each song an exercise in making the listener go comatose.
5. Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity: The good thing about Friend Opportunity is that each song has at least one part that makes you perk your ears up. The progressions are odd, the sound is a little thin and grating after a while, but her voice is cute, and the emotions are sweet. There is something to love here.
6. White Stripes - Icky Thump: I'm glad there's a rock band that really knows how to have fun. Icky Thump, Conquest, Rag and Bone, Effect and Cause.
Albums that would have been on my list had I listened to all of them (read: own them)
Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline: Stars of the Lid give me a feeling that no other band does. Sometimes you just want to melt into a pool of water, and these are the guys you listen to when you do. I'll buy it soon.
Justice - †
oh, and Battles' Atlas is truly the single of the year. The most kickass live song evah.
Edit: Buy Sound of Silver, seriously.

Not bought that much music this year due to money but on the upside I've been nicking mp3s off my housemates for 6 months :). On with the list:
Sonic Boom Six - Arcade Perfect: Stupidly bouncy ska/punk/reggae with witty lyrics aplenty.
Jesu - Conqueror: Drone rock with deep deep basslines, echoing riffs with haunting lyrics richly suffused with beautiful melancholy.
Younger Brother - The Last Days Of Gravity: Twisted and wonderful electronica veering through psychadelia and ambient before ending in a pile up with world music :).
The Birthday Massacre - Walking With Strangers: Stupidly danceable goth rock.
Capdown - Wind Up Toys: Blisteringly fast ska/punk with biting lyrics drenched in anger.
Trojan Records - Jonny Greenwood Is The Controller: Trojan Records decided to let Jonny Greenwood scamper through their archives and emerge with a heavyweight compilation.
Burial - Untrue: I've been listening to this a hell of a lot when I'm out walking at night, beautifully chilling stuff.

Why does everyone seem to think that a happy Radiohead is a good radiohead. Were they happy when they did The Bends? NO. okc? NO!! Stop celebrating them being happy
Jackablade on 20/12/2007 at 23:54
They still sound like Radiohead
