Tell me about the Philippines if you know anything, please. I have to go for a few months. I have no real idea how I got into this mess, but do you have any advice?

Make your way to Boracay ASAP, and stay the fuck away from Mindanao. A native or 'local' that you trust is key, but almost everyone speaks english.
Get used to being stared at, and not being in a hurry. Don't point at or upwards if you must use your hands to call peoples attention. Be prepared to say "no" a lot, unless you want an entourage that will drain your pockets faster than a Balibago bar girl. Stay on open walkways, avoid alleys. Also avoid the wet markets until you are well adjusted to the way things are done there.
Keep your head, but relax and have a good time. PI can be a great place once you learn the ropes.

If you're still there at easter time, don't sign anything you don't understand or you could volunteer to be the guy on the cross

fortunately i am headed to boracay. some sort of resort. from there im not too sure where. thank you for your advice. what exactly is a wet market? and why not point upwards? i can understand not pointing directly at someone, but the fact that you specifically mentioned not pointing upwards strikes me as strange.

If you can swing it a visit to BAGIO CITY and the open Bazaar is a fun trip, as well as the public gardens.
That's on Luzon in the high mountains.

A friend who lived there for a while says they have a fruit called durian that smells like rotting meat but tastes really good. A lot of the hotels have rules against eating it in the rooms because the smell sticks around for quite a while.
That's the sum total of my knowledge about the Philippines.

Durian was all over the vegetables and fruits section of the supermarket I used to buy my stuff from in Beijing. It smells, sure, but I never thought it was that bad. Some people seemed to be almost addicted to it, spooning away at one with a glassy look in their eyes, but I thought the taste was kinda lame. Foodwise, nothing so far in my life has smelled worse than some of the street kitchens I passed by in Seoul.
I might do Philippines next year, gotta keep that Boracay thing in mind..

The one fact I know about the phillipines is that there's a custom where women use their, er... monthly offerings as face cream. After that I didn't really want to know any more facts.
