I have a 9800 Pro 128mb. What do I need to do to turn it into an XT?

I'm very pleasantly surprised as to how well it runs on my computer.
Strange... I have an X800XL and a 3000+, and if I max out everything (at 800x600) then I get an average of 20 fps outdoor. The worst part is it's still ugly. Far Cry is still looking better than this game (both indoor and outdoor), and, outdoor, the Far Cry engine is at least 3 or 4 times faster. To have a decent framerate (60 fps) at 800 x 600 with Oblivion, I have to put the viewing distance sliders almost all the way down. But then, everything pop up just in front of me. On the other hand, it's true that the loading time is really fast. It's even better than Morrowind.
The sad part for me is I know I probably won't like this game (I didn't like morrowind) and I bought it for the "woaw" factor (like morrowind). I wanted to look at beautiful graphics. I remember some videos I saw so times ago. Yesterday, I was even thinking about buying a new computer just for that. Well... After seeing what the game really looks like, even when everything is maxed out, I can say that it's not worth it. How come the videos of one year ago were better looking than what we get now ? I can understand a low framerate, I know that a X800XL is an old card and I was more than willing to buy a 7900GT or even a new computer, but I can't understand the fact that this game is, visually, barely on par with a two years old game.

@ slither
thanks for all the answers...I will not get a new card at this time, but I will try to see if I can find that emulator that people where talking about. But I,too, am not placing much hope into that. However, they say that hope is the last thing that dies. I will keep you guys updated if I find something.

that was actually the real name of the program and it sounded nice, but....it does not work. still get that white screen with the rainbow eyes at the character selection...
:tsktsk: :tsktsk: :tsktsk: ...but I understand that the game wants 9.0 cards, just wish they would have said that on the box.
thanks again for the help but I refuse to pay crazy money for a card just to play this game. there are plenty of other titles that will keep me occupied for the times I actually have time to play. ;)

You might as well get a 3rd party heatsink (if you've got a Sapphire) and overclock your card. You'll get the exact same performance gain, and all you'll be losing out on is your OS reporting it as an XT instead of a pro.

Man....when I saw my first rat all I could think was...we need a UWII remake with the oblivion engine. I would love to see (man its been a long time since I've played UWII...is it a rotworm?) what a rotworm would look like...
Also the games framerate works for me, but it is amazing that so many other games with similar quality of graphics can run so tight...but what Oblivion managed to do, which I haven't really seen on this scale, is to have a really organic feel to the world...edges are rounded where they should be and so on...

It's an ATI, actually. I don't care if I change the BIOS or not, overclocking would be good enough. What kind of cooling would I need to bring it up to XT clock speeds?

Anything made by Thermalright or Zalman is a good buy. I'd recommend (
http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/ThermalRight-V1-p-16257.html) this.
But if you want my opinion, the $25 you'd be plunking down just to get what'll end up being a rather small performance boost would really be better spent on a new card. If I were you I'd just save my money.
Or you could try it without the heatsink. I wouldn't recommend it, since the stock ATI 9800 Pro's have pretty crappy heatsinks, but it could still work.

From what I remember, 3D Analyze only emulates the capability, tricking the game into 'thinking' you have capability x, or shader model x hardware. What that means is, it 'can' allow you to run the game.
What that doesn't mean, is that you will be able to see the pixel shading effects and the like, because it's not actually rendering it, but merely making the game think that it is.
Anyway, I'm still waiting on my DVD-Drive.
I got the collectors edition from Wal-Mart on the 21st.
I have at least managed to play it for a little bit on a friend of mine's system. (AMD Sempron 2200+, 768MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600XT, running good at 1024x768, medium detail, bloom and AA off, tree canopy shadows on, and draw distance kicked down a hair.)
I must say, It's better then I thought it was going to be, and as a plus, It's freaking gorgeous!

there's too many sliders in the menu .. and i can't find any options for just a general "medium detail", "high detail", etc. i can't belive mine autodetected ultra high because it is running so terribly. the new nvidia drivers helped a little bit indoors... but it's still slow as crap, especially in combat. i've got all the insane stuff turned off (hdr, bloom), and i never use AA so i'm not sure why i'm getting such bad framerates :(
